The long hot summer is over and since reunion the personal contact with the brotherhood of '38 has been rather lean. In July however, my duty as crew on an ocean racing sailboat bound for Halifax took me to Marblehead where I jumped ship for an evening with Wendell Lake and his recent bride, Mary. The latter, a charming young widow, presented five dependents as a dowry.

However, the Alumni Records office has furnished me with several success stories which I will now reveal, not necessarily in order of importance.

On July 8, 1969, President Nixon appointed Ambassador Joseph John Jova to be the United States Representative on the Council of the Organization of American States. Prior to this appointment he had served as Ambassador to Honduras and in other assignments in the Foreign Service dating back to his discharge from the United States Navy following World War II. Your scribe ran into Lieutenant Joe Jova on the porch of the Washington Hotel in Panama in 1943 and can attest that his old-world charm and fluency in Spanish was highly effective on this and many later occasions in that area.

President Nixon, again drawing on the Dartmouth ranks, has appointed John Nassikas, a Manchester, N. H., lawyer, to serve as chairman of the Federal Power Commiss ion. John formerly served as counsel for the Republican minority on the Senate Commerce Committee and as New Hampshire deputy Attorney General.

At the Bryant College commencement held June 21, 1969 in Providence, Hamilton B.Mitchell delivered the Commencement Address and received the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws. Ham is president and chief executive officer of Dun & Bradstreet, Inc. In conferring the degree President Hoslett characterized him as "good friend, business leader and concerned American."

Professor Harold J. Herman of Harvard University was a member of a seven-man delegation of the National Council of Churches that held off-the-record discussions with top leaders of the National Liberation Front and the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam, as well as with various Vietnamese exile groups. Following his return from Paris early this year Professor Berman has used these discussions as the subject matter of lectures and articles.

Robert Edward Feinman and his family were honored at a monthly Chamber of Commerce Breakfast given at Rochester, N. H., on May 27, 1969. Feinman's is one of the nation's oldest retail establishments still being operated by the family that founded it. The plaque which was presented to Bob cited the store for upholding the retail code of quality value and service to customers since 1854. Bob has headed the operations of the store since his discharge from the service in 1945.

From the Beck Bulletin, house organ of theHenry C. Beck Company, we were not surprised to learn that Henry C. Beck is president. We were surprised, however, to learnthe size and scope of this company's operations from its offices in Dallas, Atlanta,Phoenix, Palo Alto, and Houston. Amongrecent contracts awarded or completed arean eighteen-story building for the Zale Corporation in Dallas, a thirty-story officebuilding for South Central Bell Telephonein Birmingham to be known as "Alabama'slargest office building," a twelve-story American National Bank Building in Chattanoogaand a home office building of similar sizefor American National Insurance Companyin Galveston. The Beck Company is alsocredited with the construction of LaunchComplex 34 at Cape Kennedy. This launchpad was used for the first manned flight inthe Apollo program and has played a majorrole in NASA manned space flights with its310 foot tower.

Recently elected to the Sales Executives Club of New York was Roy D. DuckworthJr., Advertising Sales Manager of News Syndicate Company.

Time marches on and the two wedding announcements concern the new generation. On June 21 Miss Pauline Sue Hickson became the bride of John Howland Rand, son of John and Sally Rand in a double ring ceremony performed in the Congregational Church in Norwich, Vt. The groom is a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Meanwhile, across the river in Hanover, Miss Eleanor Katherine Tanis, daughter of Giland Fran Tanis, was married to Charles Terrence Smith on July 5 in St. Thomas Church.

In closing I am reminding the New Engenders that the usual do-it-yourself class reunion will be executed at the Harvard game and it is hoped that the hard core group of Marshall, Hitchcock, Lutz, Forgan, and Ammarell will be reinforced. Look for a conspicuous flag, banner, or other device bearing the legend "Class of '38." Snacks, set-ups and other goodies will be available. For further information get in touch with Charlie Hitchcock at 73 Thaxter Street, Hingham, Mass.
