Labor Day arrived before I knew it, and I ended up having to call Hanover to confess that I would be late getting in the copy for these notes. With the summer hiatus, this is always the occasion for a full news bag. If you sent me some news on a reply postcard or otherwise and don't see it this month, please be patient.
This month has always been an occasion, at least since I have authored this column, to take a look at how the Class did on the Alumni Fund. On dollars, we did great this year, ranking fifth among all classes in achievement of objective with 125.2%. The only sour notes in that regard are that 1953, which raised approximately $11,500 more than we did. ranked first; and 1954 ranked third.
On participation, however, I can't be particularly proud of our ranking of 40th out of 70 classes, with only 455 donors and 76.9% on the complicated index. I know that Head Agent Howie Phillips and his hardworking co-workers really sweated this one and deserve the credit for our excellent showing in dollars, which to some extent makes up for, but does not excuse, our poor showing on participation.
The Class added two new members to the College's Alumni Council in June. In my last column, I noted that Howie Phillips was elected to the Council as representative of the Class Agents. Howie; by the way, recently switched jobs. He is now with the securities firm of Oppenheimer & Co. in New York as vice president - Corporate Development. Howie is in charge of new business in the corporate finance department, including venture capital, private placements, and public offerings.
In addition, Judge Jim Rogers from Minneapolis was elected as a regional representative from the upper Mid-West. Howie and Jim, together with Bob Kreidler, constitute the three active members of the Class on the Alumni Council. Paul Staley, who just retired, and earlier retiree Russ Dilks, bring the total class representation to five, more than any more recent class, and also more than many older classes.
