The heartening response to my news solicitation mailing to classmates who have not appeared herein since at least the last time they moved, is responsible for the entire contents of this month's column. With more than enough news to fill this column (but please continue to send back those reply postcards - there are future columns to fill), I had to be selective. As a result, every classmate mentioned below has not appeared in this column since prior to our advanced 15th Reunion in June 1965.
It is with regret that I begin with the report that Dr. Franz Schneider's wife passed away unexpectedly in February. The Class extends its deepest sympathies to Franz.
Fellow medic Jim Thorpen practices pathology at Natrona County Memorial Hospital in Casper, Wyo. He has three sons: Charles, 7: James, 5; and Patrick 1. In his copious free time, classmate Jim plays tuba in a Dixieland jazz band known as the "Oil City 6" and searches the hills for Indian artifacts.
Marr Mullen is still practicing orthopedic and scoliosis surgery in Seattle, Wash. He, wife Nancy, Kathi, 8, and Richard, 7, simply moved into a newly built house on the shores of Lake Washington. Marr has taken to skiing in the Bugaboo Mountains of the Canadian Rockies. The last leg of the trip in is by helicopter. Sportsman Marr also mentions spring kayaking on the rivers of Washington State and looking forward to summer water-skiing.
In these days of specialization, we find Dick Horswell at the 30-man Arnett Clinic in Lafayette, Ind. (where Purdue is). He specializes in internal medicine and subspecializes in gastroenterology. He and wife Cindy, a registered nurse, have three children: Dick, 12; Susan, 8; and Tamara, 1. In his spare time, classmate Dick is a greenhouse hobbyist.
Fellow medic Joe Lindner is associate dean of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He and wife Doris, who is also a doctor, have one daughter, Laura, 4½. SAC pilot Major Don Kope has been transferred to Castle Air Force Base in California. His new assignment is that of instructor pilot for fledgling tanker pilots. Don and his family are now residing in Merced.
Ed Mansfield is currently a Professor of Economics at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, having previously taught at Carnegie Tech, Cal Tech, Harvard, and Yale. He is also a member of the Advisory Committee of Planning of the National Science Foundation and has been a member of the Governor's Science Advisory Committee. In addition, Ed does consulting, currently for Rand Corporation, the U. S. Army, the Small Business Administration, the National Science Foundation, and a number of business firms. Past consultees of his include the Federal Power th0nxT IS-S'°n' t'le department of Commerce, the National Automation Commission, and the Executive Office of the President.
In between, Ed has found the time to write or edit five books and about 50 articles on economics, statistics, and operations research, and has been an editor of the Journal of the American Statistical Association. He is married with two children, Edward, 6, and Elizabeth, 2.
Fellow educator Mort Briggs has been at Kansas State University in Manhattan since 1965, where he is an Associate Professor of History. Late this summer he will return East to take up a position at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston. Mort and wife Barbara have a son Jody, 14, and a daughter Nina, 12.
Musician George Biggs preceded Mort back east by two years after completing his Ph.D. resident study at the University of Indiana. George received his degree last summer and is now an Associate Professor at Barrington (R. I.) College, where he taught prior to his stint at Indiana. He mentions "an interesting team teaching experience in the humanities during Jan. ('Winterim') at Barrington." George's daughters Karen and Janet are now 10 and 11½.
On the West Coast, Charlie Mayorkas is controller of Barth and Dreyfuss of California in Los Angeles with responsibilities in financial and general management. He and wife Anita Gabor ("no relation") have three children - Cathy, 11; Alex, 9; James, 5 - and are expecting their fourth. His main activity of note is "that I am still alive and well out of the reaches of 'my friend' Mr. Castro in Cuba."
Dan Rownd is comptroller of the Security National Bank & Trust Co. in Wheeling, W. Va. He and wife Joyce have a brood of three: Tom, 17; Deb, 16; and Jim, 9. CurtGuild works for Guild Carbide Products, Inc., in West Springfield, Mass., and has six children: Mitchell, 14; Katherine, 13; Cynthia, 12; Laurence, 8; Laura, 7; and Martha, 4.
George Emerson is vice president-sales of Illinois Iron & Bolt Co. in Carpentersville (near Chicago). On the side he is attending the University of Chicago Business School. He and wife Marillyn have two sons, Steve, 11, and Jeff, 7.
Don Snell works for General Electric at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Schenectady, N. Y. He is manager, Reactor Core Design, in a project which is designing nuclear reactors for the next nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. He and wife Joanne have four children: Anne, 14; Nancy, 13; John, 9; and Maryann, 5.
After 15 years as senior pastor of Trinity Church, Cleveland, Dick Bucey is now senior minister of the United Church of Christ of Avon Lake, Ohio. He and wife Norma have a brood of three: David, 11; Scott, 9; .
Dave Skinner practices law in San Francisco in association with Quent Kopp '49. He has two children, Matthew, 15, and Charlotte, 11, and plays on a San Francisco based hockey team.
Don Klinck is president of the W. C. Root Insurance and Real Estate Agency in East Haddam, Conn. He and wife Mary have three children: Kathleen, 12; Elizabeth, 11; and Philip, 9. His extracurricular activities include golf, bridge, and ? "breeding Bolivian wild pigs"?
Another classmate in agriculture has turned up, this time in Central Florida. JimSaurman is a citrus grower and has a citrus and gift shop at the Turkey Lake Plaza of the Florida Turnpike, where he urges classmates to "stop in and keep Florida green!" At one of his groves, he also raises geese, peacocks, and guinea hens. Jim's family consists of wife Ann; son Jim, 5; and daughter Jane, 3. In extracurricular activities, he has placed for three years in a row in the Florida Citrus Open Pro-Amateur Golf Tourney.
Jack Giegerich helps to keep the North Country spirit alive as a manufacturers' rep for several ski clothing and equipment companies. He, wife "Teddy," and sons Jack, 9, and Steve, 7, live in the Philadelphia suburbs. Father keeps in shape with tennis and squash.
Fellow Philadelphia suburbanite NelsBrown is a services supervisor concerned with expense, budget, and force for "Pa." Bell, i.e., Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania. He and wife Peg have two children, Jeff, 11, and Pam, 10.
