It was a dark and stormy night when Sandy McGinnes cabled from his temporary Dean's quarters in the Lebanon Armory to warn me that a wild-eyed but dedicated junta of '64's had emerged from their reunion stupor long enough to grant me the honor of writing this column for a time. After we exchanged sundry pleasant deanerisms (i.e., we compared counter-confrontation tactics) I agreed to give the column a try. I did not know then that a class secretary faces an incredible problem: lack of news from his classmates. Being a class secretary without news is rather like being Moe without a keg to sell or Nick Listorti without social funds enough to buy one. So, please drop me a card or letter to tell me where you are and what you're doing, and to relay any news about yourself or other '64s which might be of interest to the Class. Suggestions for the column are also welcome.
Spies in Cleveland tell me that CharlieCarr (who since completing his Master's degree in Musicology at Case-Western Reserve University has been masquerading as a mild-mannered music director at a private girl's school) has become engaged to a fine hometown honey who teaches fledgling preppies at a neighboring school for boys. Rumors that they first met in a cloakroom paste crock during a grueling "hide 'n seek" tournament are unconfirmed.
Larry Williams tied the big knot on May 31; he and his bride, Rebecca, promptly spent an idyllic honeymoon as ranger and ranger naturalist at the site of what was once known (before this summer's mysterious thaw) as Glacier National Park.
Jon Herschler, Dave Larson, and BillThibault each received M.D. degrees in June from Colorado, George Washington, and UVM, respectively. When last heard about, Jon was on his way to intern at the Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton; Dave was bound for Milwaukee County Hospital (bravely fighting back recurrent visions of Schlitz vats); and Bill was asking the way to San Jose where he was to intern at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
Al McKee received an M.A. degree from the Fletcher School in June. Keith Dupree, one of '64's distinguished scholars, spent the summer on an NSF grant studying with the Engineering Concepts Curriculum Project at U Mass. Keith, who holds a Master's degree from Brown, has been teaching math at Wilton High School in Connecticut.
Bob Zukowski was married to Katherine Armeny in June. Bob, who now holds A.B., B.M.E., M.S., and M.A. degrees, is associated with Touche, Ross, Bailey and Smart in New York
Army Captain Glenn Kendall, who is fondly remembered for his patient informal ski instruction as well as his penchant for emptying lager pitchers in that place on Webster Avenue with the funny red door, expects to return to Hanover for graduate work at Tuck. Glenn and his charming wife, Martha (a Wellesley Scholar) were stationed in Germany for three years prior to Glenn's assignment to Vietnam.
This month's '64 Career Spotlight is on Alex Varkas who, besides being the acknowledged Soiled Linen King of Boston, turns a tidy shekel peddling rancid baklavah to a consortium of Cape Cod beekeepers who are attempting to develop a strain of rancid bees.
Well, that's about all for now. In the months ahead, given your kind cooperation in forwarding news, I hope to be able to answer such burning questions as: What ever happened to Bill Curran? Is Jay Regan immanent or transcendent? Does Herb McCord really control C.B.S. Radio? Does Judi McCord really control Herb?
Harry Morse '03 (c), recovering from abroken hip at the University Hospitals ofCleveland, was in the capable hands ofDartmouth doctors, (l to r) Joel Noe '67,Sidney Goldman '60, James Sammarco'62 and Tony Wattleworth '61.
