Signs of growing old age: This is being written just after the beginning of the year 1969. The 30th Reunion of 1938 takes place this June. The list of Alumni Officers, recently published, is now replete with numerals in the '40's, '50's, and even '60's, where '30's used to prevail; more of this later.
There was a very respectable list of 1938 sons in the freshman class in a recent issue of the MAGAZINE.
Undoubtedly the top news story of the month concerns the election of Richard C.Jones (formerly of Etna and Lebanon) to be president of the University of New York State College at Cortland, formerly known as Cortland Teachers'. Dick had been for a number of years at New Paltz, and now moves on to Cortland.
A very discouraging card from PeteSchaeffer recounts that Ev Wood' spent the whole month of October in Hanover, and I didn't even get a glimpse of him. How can I keep track of things, if the constituency doesn't cooperate? Pete himself plans to be in Hanover sometime in January, since his son is doing the play-by-play commentary on hockey games for WDCR.
As by now most of you should appreciate, copy for this column is due before the 5th of the month preceding publication hence, a great number of items referred to in the future become part of the past tense and news frequently is no longer of much note by the time this screed becomes a part of the public domain, Hence, also, there is a good chance of duplication with the Pace Setter, since Marshall gets news out almost as soon as he receives it.
A nice note from Bud Lynch recounts frequent trips to Hanover this fall to watch his son play freshman football, and also not finding time to drop in on your respondent. Perhaps some of the freshman fathers will make up for these omissions during the Freshman Fathers' Weekend this winter. Bud is still doing pediatrics in Westport, Conn., and, when last seen, was not wasting away.
In the Bay State, John F. Graham has shifted from senior vice president to executive vice president of the Norfolk County Bank & Trust Co. W. R. Grace Co., as a result of the reorganization of its Dewey & Almy Chemical Division, has appointed James D. Kingery as a vice president.
Telfer Mook continues to make headlines with his good work; this time he was guest preacher at the First Congregational Church in Greenwich, Conn. Tel is still Regional Secretary for Southern Asia of the United Church Board for World Ministries and commutes between the Far East and the United States with some regularity.
Of top interest to members of the Class will be the award to Dean Karl Hill of the degree of Doctor of Laws (Hon.) at the Homecoming Convocation of Drury College. Part of the citation, after summarizing his many contributions to the field of business education, including the integration of the computer into the educational program of every student, went on to state, "The positive influence which Dean Hill has had as a teacher and administrator has stimulated the young men with whom he has worked over the years to go forth not only to lives of significant achievement, but also to community service."
Returning now to the aforementioned list of Alumni Officers, we find 1938 represented on the Alumni Council by Paul Urion, BobHallock, and Bob Manegold. Whereas not so many years ago, the roster of officers of alumni clubs was replete with 1938's, pickings this year are sparse. True it is that PhilLeach is a member of the Executive Committee of the General Association; MorganMarshall is secretary of the Melrose-Winchester another hat, is secretary of the Rochester, N. H., Club; Dick Sherwin is president of the Brattleboro (Vt.) Club; and Gus Hennessey is secretary of the Quebec Alumni Association.
Although still boasting some top brass in the "enrollment" picture is Bob Manegold as a member of the Alumni Council Committee on Enrollment and Admissions; and Paul Urion and Ed Perrin as Area Enrollment Directors in their particular bailiwicks. So far as rank and file are concerned, the sole representative is Ross Borneman, Director for District 134 Northwestern Indiana.
On the Third Century Fund, as you might expect, Bob Hallock is Worcester (Mass.) Chairman; Charley Walkley serves for Norfolk, Va.; Bruce Olson is in Rockford, Ill and Blair Warner serves for South Bend and Northern Indiana.
As always, the gratitude of the Class and the College must go out to men who give so freely of their time and energy for the benefit of Dartmouth.
