It sometimes is said that "the ball team which is in the lead on the fourth of July will take the pennant." I don't know if there is much statistical truth to this saying, but in trying to apply the same thinking to the annual "Green Derby" race I believe there is some correlation between where classes are positioned after the first month of an Alumni Fund drive and where they are when June 30 rolls around. This year, however, I hope that there is no such correlation, for as the end of the first month drew near, "Fifty was in fifth" in our group, which is far from the first division standing to which we are accustomed, and somewhat disturbing as both participation-wise and dollar-wise we were substantially behind the 1967 pace.
By the time you read this things well may have changed, for Sandy McCulloch has an excellent group of assistant class agents in the field this year, and I know that they're trying to get the word across that this is a most important year for all of us to participate. The merit of helping provide the College with needed operating funds is great; it is deserving of a greater participation by our Class than has heretofore been the case.
Needless to say it will take contributions, both large and small, by many to hit the $2 million 1968 Alumni Fund mark, and even more meaningful ones to successfully reach the $5l million goal of Dartmouth's Third Century Fund. Although the emphasis of this capital drive is on Programs rather than Facilities, some $17½ million has been earmarked for the latter, including new or additional facilities for Physical Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities (including a much-needed expansion of Baker Library), the three Professional Schools, dormitory and dining facilities, and (last but not least) athletics and physical education. This copy is due in Crosby Hall before my annual trek to Hanover for Class Officers Weekend, so I am not fully aware of all that has occurred to date or which will be done in the near future, but do understand that when Bob Blackman's forces make their Memorial Stadium gridiron debut this fall it will be in a facility whose seating capacity will have been increased by one-third.
Among those we expect to see more of in the Memorial Stadium stands is GeorgeDuffy, who now is residing in Fairfield, Conn. 06430 on Burr Street. He's a vice president of Harper-Atlantic Sales, Inc.,located at 535 Fifth Avenue, New York City. Another long-time resident of the midwest who now is performing corporate duties in the big city is J. Clarke Bassett, who is with the International Milling Company at 99 Park Avenue; the Bassett residence is 15 Country Club Lane, Pelham Manor, N.Y. 10803.

Ralph C. Nash Jr.'s mail now goes to 2831 44th St., N.W., Washing, ton, D. C. 20007. Wilmer B. D. Graham Bailey is associated with the Federal Paper Stock Company, located at 4810 McKissock Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri 63147. Hal Fitkin reports a change of Denver address, to 5601 W. Green Meadows, #3, Denver, Colo. 80227. And from "way up" in that mile high city, we'll complete the change of address listings for this issue - and this academic year — by going "way over" to the Canary Islands, where Al Washburn is located at the N.A.S.A. Tracking Station, Apartado 48, Las Palmas, De Gran Canaria, Spain. The encyclopedia states that The Canaries are located about 60 miles off the northwest coast of Africa, and consist of 13 mountainous islands which are divided into two of Spain's provinces one of which is Las Palmas De Gran Canaria, which also is the name of its capital city.
There's a wee bit of space left in this month's linage allocation, so let's use it to review the Who's New situation, as reported in this season's issues of Joe Medlicott's great Newsletter. Bud and Barbara Veghte of Orford, Vt., produced an heir last June 13, William Lewis Veghte. Stan and KarenNelson of New York City had their first child, Mark Kriendler Nelson, on July Bth. On August 23, Francis Michael Poltrack was born to the Tony Poltracks of Stamford, Conn.; Francis has two older brothers. A September birthdate was recorded for Jim Wehnes' fourth daughter, Linda, in Elmhurst, Ill. Tony and Gail Ambrose had their 3rd child and 2nd daughter, Christina Marie on October 13, in Morristown, N.J. Paul and Joan Lena checked in their 4th boy, Patrick Hugh, on October 24 in Concord, N.H. The delivery rate apparently slowed after that, although several other new arrivals were reported in this column.
Have a fine summer, everyone, and pass along the word on your activities so that Joe and I will have lots to write about come fall.
