Since deadline for these notes is a week before Fall Reunion, this is a good time for me to catch you up on notes and news of '27ers near and far.
Nick Carter, most active for a retiree, preaching in Florida in winter, Connecticut in the summer, fills in by shopping for 18th- century pieces for their house, now a museum. Nick saw his son Phil receive his Doctorate from Indiana University in June and tells us his daughter has received a nice fellowship for study this year.
Bob Bliss (Janesville, Wise.) won't be able to make Hanover - says the campaign is keeping him busy in his editorial capacity as well as his membership on the Governors Commission on Human Rights.
Nice note from Dow Mills reporting on what must be some kind of a Dartmouth record. 33 alumni in Rochester, Minn., all but 4 being physicians, have recruited 14 undergraduates, now in Hanover. Dow has a daughter working in San Francisco - a son at Georgetown heading for the law - and two in grade school. He passes along the sad news of the death of Tom Anglem's wife Mary, August 7. Our deepest sympathies, Tom.
Joe Calcagni referring to Smitty's birthday machine now on that annual reminder, says his family is looking for a miniature in the local appliance stores. Chuck Brewster, now a resident of Hawaii, writes that he is taking a vacation from Honolulu by visiting the other islands. Sends a picture of Kauai which is quite spectacular.
Paul Hannah reported earlier of his trip south which led them through the Smoky Mountain National Park and thus a visit to Gladys and Frell Owl. To quote Paul: "Both are wonderful in health, happiness, and hospitality. Frell has retired from the Indian Service to return to his beloved North Carolina mountains, where he is as active as he was before. In addition to establishing a highly successful camping area, he is the incoming president of a service organization, a vice-president of the Chamber of Commerce, and, most important of all, chairman of the Committee on Revision of the Cherokee Nation Constitution. He knows where every trout lurks, and the Isaac Waltons, of our class, can do no better than to visit Frell and Gladys and their beautiful Piney Woods camp ground on the Oconaluftee River on the edge of Smoky Mountain National Park."
Paul modestly attaches, without comment, an excerpt of the Congressional Record which in turn carries* in full, Paul's article in Harvard Business Review - May-June 1964 — entitled "Government Buying Erodes Management." Business men, lawyers, and, you and I will find this a most complete and provocative statement concerning expanding government.
Your most dependable Boston Correspondent, Bob Williamson, sends a program and clippings covering the 100th Anniversary Celebration of Boston City Hospital. Included in awards and citations for Distinguished Achievements in Medicine is the following: "Thomas Hale Ham, noted educator, administrator, and investigator; his boundless energy is devoted to providing the best education for future physicians." Congratulations, Hale.
Other reporters include Al MacDonald who sent a clipping on the election of HankOrth as president of H. C. Miller Company of Milwaukee. Hank, in replying to a note conveying our congratulations, says his company is a long established firm of printers and manufacturing stationers. Mid Western buyers of same please note.
Rudy Preuss welcomes back Smitty's art in class card. You'll understand when your birthday comes around.
Charlie Bartlett, recently elected vice president of the Boston Bar Association, reports another vacation in Ireland this year, rather than sailing off Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Labrador. What's this indicative of, Barbara?
Gil Gilbert has things well organized what with nine months of swimming, boating, fishing, bowling, and gardening in Sarasota and the summer months up north. Sees Marge and Paul Pierson and reports that son Fenton and daughter Gerry are both married. Ornithologists should note that Harv Jones' son Laurie, age 14, is bird photographer of note, and the youngest member of the Chicago Ornithological Society. He inherited his interest and some talent from his father, an ardent photographer. (Harv please note, column open to photos of '27ers - with or without birds.)
Other reports of 27 retirees - Len Dunn - Mesa, Ariz. - 30 minutes from Phoenix Airport - makes use of his Grandpa's Bragging Permit, reporting number one. Notes golf every week, even in the 100's (fails to indicate whether temperature or score). Says they have more visitors in Arizona than they had back here. Ask '27ers to swell the list. Ros Guyot reports much activity on a relocation and building program for the First Congregational Church of Glendale (Calif.). Phil Hunt in neighboring Pasadena has been made chairman of the new Pasadena Chapter of the American Institute of Interior Designers.
Bill Browning, the eminent M.D. of Bennington, Vt., had his son and family home this summer. His son is a new M.D. from Stanford and is starting his internship in Grand Rapids, Mich. Tom Wheeler - Troy, Ohio - got off to Europe this summer and spent a few days in Connecticut, we didn't connect as we were off sailing. Jerry Allis has returned to Springfield, Mass., from Florida. The Ed Jacobs' daughter, Dorothy, married Albert Bacon in June. CharlieFleischer admits to being an old buck but has no complaints. Ray Reed says all is well and 8 grandchildren and hopes the same for me - ? 8 ?
The East Orange, N. J., Record says "When Jim Picken steps out the side door of Clifford Scott High School this Monday, it will mark the conclusion of one of New Jersey's most brilliant athletic, coaching and teaching careers." Jim can now concentrate on our 40th.
Ed Ruth says he still has to do a lot of travelling including a monthly trip to Michigan. Hopes to stretch it all the way East to New York and Hanover one of these days.
Paul Woodbridge '29 writes that Bill Pelton is progressing well from a recent heart encounter, says no office or ping-pong quite yet. A note from you to Bill would be good medicine.
Help! The foregoing exhausts every single news note in my file. No mail means no news next time - write and ye shall read.
