Last year at this time we were struck warmly, though sorrowfully, by a grateful father's beautiful expression of thanks for the messages which were sent by '42's during his son's courageous fight to live.... "The messages we have had from our son's Dartmouth friends bespeak a brotherhood the memory of which will be dear to us as long as we live." Your secretary went on to comment that. . . "Individually and collectively we, too, can be grateful that we share a 'prize' which is worthy of the 'game' . . . indeed fortunate are we all, and the many ways in which forms of gratitude may take shape are too obvious to mention, the annual Alumni Fund being one significant example." Yes, a year has gone by since then, and that time of opportunity has arrived. To give is to "smile"; not to give is to "frown."

Boston, Mass. ... At the annual meeting of Lynd-Farquhar Corporation held February 3, 1969 Mr. Howard L. Rich was elected executive vice president and Robert Rich was elected vice president. Arlington Heights, I. .. . Robert B.Dewey, account supervisor in the Chicago office of Young and Rubicam, Inc. has been elected a vice president of the agency. He joined them in 1959, and has been in the advertising agency business for 20 years. He was named account supervisor in 1965. Prior to going to Y & R he was merchandising account executive for Maxon, an account executive for McCann Erickson, both of Detroit, and account executive for McManus, John, and Adams of Birmingham, Mich.

Wausau, Wis. ... Daniel L. Haage of 20 North Hill Road has been named operations coordinator in the safety and health services department of Employers Insurance of Wausau. Dan will also continue to coordinate inter-branch policyholder services. He is a Wausau native and is one of that rare breed who maintains that youthful appearance of college days after 27 years (count 'em! It is 27 years this month-May 10 graduation, 1942) out of Dartmouth. We hope, Dan, that you feel as good as you look.

The Dartmouth Club of Southern California .. . has formed "The Friend Indeed Committee" to try to establish a "responsive presence" for the benefit of any alumnus or Dartmouth family in their area feeling the need of comfort or support in connection with problems arising out of illness, disability, old age, misfortune, personal matters, loneliness . . . whatever, on a continuously available basis. They aren't too sure of the scope of activities that will engage them at this point, but they may be establishing an alumni pattern which will help older alumni, and men or family members who have outlived or become separated from family and friends, in which case a warm or helping hand might be welcome. Note, they "will not undertake provision of direct financial aid, nor will they solicit funds for any such purpose . . . outside of that, we'll do the best we can." We salute the Dartmouth Club of Southern California for the spirit in which they are launching the project and we shall be interested in hearing of the results as the project progresses. Members of "The Friend Indeed Committee" are from the classes of 1924, 1928, and 1955, with Alan Leslie, M.D. 1930, the chairman.

If you are thinking of summer school this year (and why not?) or know of younger ones who are, why not attend Dartmouth College? Listen to this .. . : Dartmouth offers a fine opportunity to enrich educational aims in its coeducational eight-week summer term Students come from 150 other schools and many foreign countries ... to learn a language . . . fulfill a distributive requirement . . . learn the fundamentals of a computer and its uses, or to consider social and economic issues of today. ... Cultural opportunities abound in auditoriums, theaters, workshops and studios There are liberal arts workshops for business executives, institutes for scientists and engineers, and Dartmouth's own Alumni College. There is ample opportunity for tennis, golf, swimming, boating, and Dartmouth Outing Club excursions A wealth of concerts, plays, films, and art exhibits are to be found at Hopkins Center.

What are we waiting for? Isn't it great to realize that our dollars have helped to make these great things possible in an age when so many of the young and old alike have difficulty in "finding themselves"? It's great to be a part of a good, going thing!
