Hopefully, as you read this column you "in the midst of your reunion packing. A Seat weekend awaits you, I can guarantee that But before you embark for Hanover get on the horn to make a potluck call to a classmate you hope to see at the reunion tent and encourage him to join the 65 crowd. We'll welcome last-minute reservations.
Reumion regrets have just arrived from Lt. Ken McGruther. He is presently aboard the "U.S.S. Hissem," a minesweeper in WestPac. Ken has been with the Navy since graduation, and he relates that it s been a thoroughly enjoyable existence. He s recently crossed paths (wakes?) with Joe Picken (a lieutenant aboard the U.S.S. Goldsborough" in the Pacific), Wayne Simpson, and Larry Duffy. Ken hopes that his upcoming transfer will be to an NROTC instructorship - that tour of duty may prove to be every bit as treacherous as any of his Viet Nam or WestPac experiences.
Word has also come from Tarrytown, N Y„ about a recent addition to the Bob Murphy household. Scott Alan weighed in at 8 lbs. 4 ozs. on March 15, and judging from the letter it's easy to know how proud and happy Bob and Donna are. Incidentally, Murph is in the executive training program with the Chase Manhattan Bank. They've promised to be among the early reunion arrivals.
Another '65 baby belongs to the Jim Markmans, who now make their home in Bel Air, Calif. Their daughter, Jennifer Elizabeth, was born on March 4, but I confess to being delinquent in publicizing the big event. My apologies and congratulations to Jim and his bride.
Bill Affolter reports that his internship be- gins in Seattle in late June. He'll receive his M.D. from Syracuse in May. Affy's travel to the West Coast will preclude his assuming the toastmaster's duties at our reunion dinner, but he promises to be there in spirit.
Another of our budding M.D.'s, Jim Cooper, will intern in Honolulu (Tripler General Hospital) with the U.S. Army. He's done his Med School work at the Univ. of Minnesota.
One who will grace our reunion events is Mark Nackman, who is about to undertake some writing travail in Texas. He is the recipient of a Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowship, which he will use to write his Ph.D. thesis: "Indians and Frontier Defense in Texas, 1820-1860: A Study of Indian Policy and the Texan Character."
Wedding bells are included in Andy Thurm's summer plans. His engagement to Miss Ann Thomson (Barnard '67) was announced this spring. He joined Esso International in NYC after completing Columbia Business School. Ann is a doctoral candidate in psychology at NYU.
The next time you pass through Amity, N. J. (Yes, Virginia, there is an Amity, N. J.) stop off at "The Amity Store," which Jim and Joanne Fosso have recently opened there. The store is a combination coffee and bake shop and features Joanne's homemade cookies and bread. My impression is that Amity is off the beaten track a bit, but her cooking might make some backroads travel worth it.
I've recently received word of the death in late February of Paul Schuler. Paul was a 4th year student at Cornell Med. An "In Memoriam" article appears elsewhere in this or a subsequent MAGAZINE.
Harry Miles is making quite a reputation for himself as coach of the Madison High School debate team in Brooklyn. His kids have already won the New York and Long Island championships, and are appearing at the national championships of the National Forensic League in Washington, D. C., this month. Our best wishes go to him and his debaters.
Cupid continues to find easy going within our ranks. One of the latest to fall is DeaneMosher, who abandoned bachelorhood in early March for the charms of Miss Kathleen Mazur (Mt. Holyoke). He received his M.D. from Harvard last June and has been interning at the Duke University Hospital in Durham, N. C. His bride is in line for a Ph.D. in physiology from Dartmouth.
Two other prospective weddings complete our romantic news. This month both NickRummo and Al Boyce will tie the knot. Nick's mate will be Miss Judith Horn (Duke), a doctoral student in physiology at UNC. He receives his M.D. from Duke this month, too.
Al will wed Miss Sally Ann Ely (Jackson '65). They're both on the West Coast, he at the Stanford B School and she with Crocker- Citizens National Bank in San Francisco.
Again, if you're still in doubt as to what to plan for the third weekend in June, make the Hanover scene. '65 will be there in force, and your being there will add to the weekend just as each of you contributed to the enjoyment of our four years at Dartmouth. Join us - and bring a small chip to help Tim McLaughlin boost us over our annual giving goal.
So long.
