Though I am writing this column in the midst of our first post-thaw snowstorm - an annual event in N. H. - I take great vicarious pleasure in the knowledge that as you unpack your bags in Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Nassau, St. Thomas, and San Juan you will come across these words inscribed in the April ALUMNI MAGAZINE that you will have been so careful to bring along. And, as you bask in the warmth of old Sol, within view of the bare midriffs of the beach urchins and the beer soaked sweatshirts of the "Sock it to me" generation, it's a pleasure to fill you in on the goings-on among your less wealthy northern brethren. (But the order in which I mention our classmates should not be misinterpreted as a commentary on their relative wealth or lack of it.)
By the time you have finished your packing Ted Atkinson will have chucked the freedom, loneliness, and naughtiness of bachelorhood for the alluring charms of Miss Ann Rossi (Smith '67). They were scheduled to be married on March 16 in her hometown of Davis, Calif. Ted received his M.B.A. from Tuck in June, and was with General Mills in Minneapolis until he recently threw in his lot with Uncle Sam for six months.
Ed and Tina Keible have settled down in San Antonio, Texas, where he is an Air Force lieutenant at Kelly A.F.B. Ed is an engineer, and his major responsibility is engine repair and development in aircraft on its way to Viet Nam.
I recently ran into Jock Hosmer at UNH. He's just out of the service, and has hooked up with the office of the Director of Sports Information at the university. Jock hopes to start business school at UNH in the fall. He and Ann are living in Dover, N. H.
Jim Kittle writes that he and his wife, Anne, are back in NYC after a stint with VISTA. They had their first child, Sara Bradford, on Feb. 4. Jim is now at Columbia doing graduate work in psychology. '65 wedding news includes these tidbits:
Ron Lewis and Miss Brooke Minarik were married in January in Nottingham, N. H. Ron is teaching French at UNH and at Oyster River H.S. in Durham. Since graduation he has spent a year teaching English in Orleans, France on a grant from the French government, and followed that up with a year at Harvard working on his M.A.T. They're living in Nottingham.
John Kurtz was also scheduled to tie the knot before this issue went to press. The object of his affection is Miss Gay Mary Soldmann (San Diego State '68). John has a Thayer School degree and is currently working on his Master's in engineering at UCLA. After that it looks like Air Force OTS.
Bells will also ring for Gordon Hamlin and Miss Julia Keiser early this summer. He is in his senior year at Dartmouth after taking a three-year break to get his service out of the way. Julia is a graduate of Pine Manor J.C. and Katharine Gibbs, and is now working at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC.
Tuomo and Joanne Jarvinen were back in this country over the Christmas holidays on a combined business-pleasure sojourn. He was scouting out prospective locations for the site of a new ski manufacturing plant which Esko-Jarvinen Co. will build in the States. Tuomo is director of foreign sales for his dad's outfit. Home for the Jarvinens is Lahti, Finland.
Recent returns on the '65 questionnaire have yielded the following news:
John Horton and his wife Leslie are living in Durham, N. C., while he attends Duke Med. After John left Dartmouth in '63 he spent eight months in Lesotho, South Africa, and then enrolled in Columbia. He received his A.B. from Columbia in June '66 and expects his M.D. in June '70.
The engineering doctoral program at Stanford really has Fritz Offiensend excited. When he wrote he raved about the work he is doing in systems engineering with the Stanford Medical Facilities Planning Group, which is doing a systems analysis of hospital planning. Fritz has earned his B.E. from Thayer School in 1966, and his M.S. from Stanford in 1967, and is looking forward to getting a Ph.D. in systems engineering from Stanford in 1969. He is also looking forward to marrying Miss Susanne Pohlman (Lake Erie College) in September.
Jim Stanbery was also on the West Coast until very recently. Jim graduated from UCal at Berkeley in 1965, and completed his Master's work in political theory at California State College in January. At present he is with the Peace Corps stationed in the Philippines. And Jim has remained just as politically active as he was in Hanover, serving as national chairman of Collegians for Kennedy and state vice president of the California Federation of Young Democrats. With all this he still had enough time and energy to earn a Phi Beta Kappa key.
Ed Taber has returned from Viet Nam with plenty of decorations and a promotion to the rank of captain. He's currently stationed at Quantico, Va. Ed earned a Purple Heart, the Silver Star, and the Navy Commendation Medal while in Viet Nam. He'll get out of the Corps in 1969, and hopes to attend business school after that. He mentioned that one of the guys he has a chance to see often is John Pyles, who is studying at George Washington Law School.
Alvin Martin has again taken up residence in Hanover after a three-year sabbatical in England. He and John Matzke have two of the larger face hair growths on the Hanover Plain.
Don't forget the Alumni Fund - it starts this month, and we've set our sights on improving both our participation and dollar totals. Get it up for the Big Green.
