A fine turnout of 56 alumni, wives, and dates made the Atlanta Club's spring meeting a great success on Friday evening, April 18. We gathered at the Piedmont Driving Club where President Ben Read Jr. '62 enlisted the services of his father, Dr. Ben Read '32 as chief ticket taker and name card supervisor and this combination got the evening off to a good start.
During a brief business session, Ben Jr. announced plans for a ceremony commemo rating the establishing of the original site of the city of Atlanta by a Dartmouth man, Stephen Long, Class of 1809, in conjunction with Dartmouth's Third Century celebration. He is hopeful we may be able to coordinate with plans to promote "Underground Atlanta" in festivities in July.
It was announced that C. Carlton "Kelly"Coffin Jr. '43 would represent Dartmouth the following day at Clark College which was celebrating its 100th year with the inauguration of a new president. At that time, by coincidence, Morehouse College across the street was besieged by students who had locked up the trustees in the Administration Building. We live in interesting times. Representing MIT at the same ceremony was Hugh Schwarz '40. Also, Mrs. Richard C. Everett '40 represented her alma mater, so Dartmouth made a good showing at Clark.
The guest speaker of the evening was Michael J. Slive '62, Assistant Director of Athletics Mike made a most impressive presentation of the new look in Dartmouth athletics, and opened some eyes relative to the extent of undergraduate participation in all sports. Hammering nails in doors was only touched on briefly and is apparently not a recognized sport. The evening concluded with a general discussion and everyone appeared to be greatly pleased with the gathering.
