Greetings once again from Green country. I arrived home from Scotland, England, and Ireland to note that a wonderful summer had ended and the bills to pay for it had beat me home. Also, however, a pile of ’68 letters was waiting to be opened, and class column time had come once more.

One who is still traveling extensively, though, is Mike Smith, currently with Ampex Tape Systems. Mike’s job in the auditing department keeps him in motel rooms, planes, and at expense account restaurants so often that he can hardly call Illinois his home anymore. He also has been actively recruiting prospective frosh for the College in his travels. Last month, Mike spotted me at the Dartmouth Travel Bureau and told me he was in Lyme spending a few well earned weeks of vacation with some friends.

Near but far away department this month includes Bob Reich. Sporting both a handsome ’stache and a lovely young lady, Bob was spotted at the Nugget taking in the latest James Bond flick. He got away in the crowd before I had a chance to talk with him, but write a note Robert, and let us know what’s happening.

Dave Williams, one of the faithful, wrote from the Ivory Coast in transit to his home at Lake Stevens, Wash. Dave was stuffing masks and ivory into his suitcases, going around North Africa and Europe, and he arrived home late in August. This fall he will be at UCLA where he got a fellowship to study the Bambara language.

Previous PFC Chuck Jones, self-ac- claimed lost sheep among class letter writers, returned to the fold to greet us all this month. Chuck has returned to civilian life by now, and to wife Annette. They both came up to the Hanover area for some hiking in July, but unfortunately I wasn’t here to say hello to them. Chuck said in his letter that he ran into Bill Rupp, who was then a chemistry instructor at Fort Lee and a sergeant. Bill should be finished and out now, and I believe attending Med School. Let us know where you ended up, Bill, and good luck.

Many thanks to George Farrand ’33, of Upper Montclair, N. J., who wrote to tell the class about son Dick (Lt. RichardFarrand), currently stationed on Mobile Advisory Team 86 111 Corps in Vietnam. After DCS at Fort Benning, Dick moved from second It. in the Infantry to S-l adjutant at Fort Carson, Colo. From there he departed for Vietnam in June, where he was promoted to first It. last July. Best wishes to you Dick, and to your wife Karen. Stay well and come back safely.

Frank Couper, trying for Globetrotter of the Year Award, crossed the Equator last July and was initiated as a “shellback.” He planned to leave Guam and return to the USA via the Philippines, Vietnam, Thai- land, India, France, and Spain. His next job: Public Relations for the Coast Guard and working as an admiral’s aide. You are traveling more than I am, Frank!

For those who haven’t already heard, none other than our own “Monk” (Steve)Williams has been appointed to take over the helm of assistant dean of the College. On leave from Yale University Law School, Steve’s duties are effective immediately. Good luck. Monk, and here’s hoping for a smooth year.

Determined and loyal W. Boyd BarrickII is reportedly still waiting for a class address list. It looks good for this year, now that so many are finally roosting in one place. Right On, Boyd!

Roger Tung, accompanied by his wife and two-year-old daughter, made a brief return visit to the Hanover Plain at the end of last June. He wrote May 25, but neglected to send the epistle air mail, so he arrived one day after the letter did and I was not at home. We got in touch via telephone however, and he told me he spent a rather rough year as “Ombudsman” between the students and the administration at the University of Stockholm. We’d like to hear more about that. Hope to hear from you again, Roger.

June 6 was the magic day tor DickHardwood who married the former Lucy Hanson in Nashville, Tenn. Dick sent me a wedding announcement, a very good practice for all of you to remember if you want the Class to know about the event. (We always find out anyway.) Engaged are Warren Connelly and Susan Mosser (Port- land, Ore.). After completing military service at McChord Air Force Base this summer, Warren planned to attend George- town University Law School in Washington, D. C. Susan, who was studying in Vienna last year, has also transferred to Georgetown and the wedding is planned for June, 1971. Congratulations to both of you.

Hale Irwin, first lieutenant in the Marine Corps, writes from Atsugi, Japan, that he is a helicopter pilot flying the CH-46 Sea Knight. He left the States on June 10 with orders to Vietnam, but when he reached Okinawa his orders were revised because of the cutback and he became part of a three- bird detachment at an N.A.S. near Mt. Fugi south of Tokyo. Hale likes Japan and describes his present duty as “a real good deal.”

That wraps up the immediate news. Please remember: Order tickets for the Columbia Houseparties Game in the 1968 section!! Game is November 7, Deadline isOctober 16. Do it now. Location of before or after beer bust will appear in the Newsletter.
