Our Class Treasurer Jon Page tells me that excellent conditions for winter sports have brought out many '68s. Ken Dardick and Jack Gage were recently spotted on Occom Pond, figure skating and "eyeing figures."
Miles Schlosberg, who is studying law at Stanford, returned to ski on the New England hills during a recent vacation. Also, Tower Librarian Betty Breyfogle ran into Steve Hart on the slopes recently. Steve is doing graduate work at Columbia.
Jon also notes that Sam Swisher was pegged last week participating in a super snow bowl football game in front of the new Tuck Mall dormitory. A follow-up revealed that the game, played in a foot and a half of snow, was played in celebration of the end of a Tuck course in Production Management. Sam is presently in his first year at Tuck, studying for his MBA.
I probably shouldn't mention the same names too often, but our Class President Pete Hofman really deserves some small pat on the back for recently being honored at Tuck School. Pete was named a Tuck Scholar for outstanding academic performance.
I mentioned in the last issue of the MAGAZINE that Jon Moody was in the Peace Corps. No sooner did my advance information get printed when Jon sent me a card to note that Tom Ulen and Ted Kloth were also at Hilo, Hawaii, training to teach English in Korea. I understand the program is quite tough, and that for a while they each were taking as many as 45 hours of in-class instruction per week. Jon is currently practice-teaching in Honolulu, however, so things are picking up.
Pete Armstrong was named a Peace Corps volunteer after completing three months of training in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, and arrived in El Salvador on December 6. He and about 50 other Peace Corps volunteers will work to develop the fish processing and marketing industry in several countries of Central America. During their training, the volunteers studied fish processing and marketing techniques, the culture of Central America, and Spanish.
Randy Odeneal sends word that Bill Jaeger and he were out in San this past summer. While there, Bill got hooked on "one young lovely" and they got engaged December 25. She is Nancy Pennington (Stanford '68), and the couple plan a June wedding. Randy then proceeded to get cute by adding "This is beginning to sound like your column." Oh well....
Joe and Polly Carbonari are currently residents of Spokane, Wash. They write to inform me that Andy Spitzer is living in New York City and teaching elementary school in the Bronx. Pat Harty and his wife Trish, who were married in June, were last seen in Athens, Ga., while Pat was at Supply School. They are now in Louisiana where Pat has been assigned to the "USS Connole," now under construction. Along abou April, I expect to shout WAH HOO WAH for them according to reports. As for Joe and Polly, they miss Hanover as I am sure many of our classmates do. Joe is with Armstrong Cork and has to travel toe much," Polly tells me. They would love to know if anyone else is in the immediate vicinity of Spokane; they are in the phone book, and Polly makes great spaghetti!
John Mercer recently wed Nancy Cahill, of Wellesley Hills, Mass., John's old stomping grounds. Nancy attended Middlebury College. After a trip to Utah, the couple went to Quantico, Va., where John entered Marine Officers Candidate School.
Norm Silverman married Penelope Bedingfield (Merrimack '68) in a ceremony at the home of the bride's parents. Mrs. Silverman is with the Boston University Medical Center and Norm is a second-year student at Boston University Medical School.
Dick "Butcher" Eberhart, who is teaching at Thetford Academy, Thetford, Vt., plans a June wedding to Stephanie Simmons who is attending Vassar College. Best wishes from the Class to you both.
Other bits and pieces (that sounds like a bad song from several years ago): FredAppelbaum is studying medicine at the Tufts University Med School, Jim Breitinger is teaching junior high students at Madison, Ohio, Mike Muzio is a salesman for John Deere and Co., based in Syracuse, N. Y., Pete Nielson is a student at U.C.L.A., DaveRossman is at Harvard Law School, and I have been promised more postage stamps if you send me more letters to answer. Until March, stay well.
