Dartmouth's golf team was the top New England qualifier but the Indians then had to settle for third place in the 11th annual EC AC fall tournament, played at Farmingdale, N. Y., on Oct. 17 in weather more fitting for frostbite than five irons. Coach Bill Johnson used a team of Captain Marsh Gavre, Jim Cox, Clair Grant, Clarke Nims, and sophomore John Lundgren and Lundgren's 79 proved to be the low Dartmouth score in the absurd weather.
Juniors Lloyd Ucko and Brian Williams pulled a major surprise as they defeated seeded teams from Harvard, Penn and Princeton to win the "A" Division doubles championship in the ECAC fall tennis tournament.
Dartmouth's oarsmen waited until the end of the summer competition in the U. S. championships before electing Bill Pickard and Deneys Purcell as co-captains of the heavyweight eight, succeeding Steve Tourek. Tom Carey will captain the lightweight oarsmen.
Brian O'Hanlon, from Staten Island, N. Y., has been the top runner for the Dartmouth freshman cross-country team, winning his first three races. O'Hanlon and Jeff Badmington from New London, N. H., are captains of freshman cross-country and soccer, respectively.
With the injury to Charlie Silcox, Al Goodloe and John Orange have been selected as co-captains of Dartmouth's soccer team for the remainder of the season.
Looking ahead to winter briefly, Dartmouth's hockey team will compete in the EG AC Holiday Tournament at Boston Garden on Dec. 18-19 and also will be in the Nichols Tournament at Buffalo, N. Y., on Jan. 1-2.... Dartmouth's basketball team will compete in the Milwaukee Classic on Dec. 29-30 and at St. "Louis University on Jan. 2.
