Dartmouth's baseball team, in its 14th season under Tony Lupien, has a combination of veterans and sophomores who should make the Green the team to beat in the Eastern League race this spring. Dartmouth won the EIBL title last year and returns All-EIBL performers in pitcher Chuck Seelbach and shortstop Bob Mlakar plus secondteam picks Bruce Saylor, the captain and rightfielder, and third baseman Craig Conklin, one of the East's best defensive players.
Seelbach heads the corps of pitchers that will include the heralded sophomore Pete Broberg (son of Dartmouth's basketball All-America Gus Broberg '41) and Charlie Janes, another good sophomore. If he develops control, Broberg will be one of the nation's top collegians. The fire-balling righthander had a 6-0 frosh record that included three no-hitters.
Coaches are usually conservative in their pre-season outlooks but golf coach Bill Johnson (whose team was 12-1 last year) feels the return of Ken Kotowski from military service will combine with an intact top lineup from 1969 to make Dartmouth a candidate for (1) an undefeated season, (2) the Eastern Intercollegiate title and (3) a berth in the NCAA tournament. Kotowski was Dartmouth's top golfer before entering the Army and the Indians have a great supporting cast in Marsh Gavre, Dave Hill, Jim Cox, Mike Furey, and Mark Hallenback.
For the second year in a row, Dartmouth's crew used spring vacation to train on Lake Martin in Alabama and if the two-week session is as fruitful as it was in 1969, the Indians may be a better boat than the one that finished second to Pennsylvania in the IRA championships last June at Syracuse, N. Y. Captain Steve Tourek at No. 4, Bill Pickard in the bow, and Terry Adams at stroke head six returnees from the IRA boat. Coach Peter Gardner feels that if the boat stays in good health and continues its progress, the Indians will improve on a 1969 record (they beat 21 boats) that was the best in Dartmouth history.
Dudley Hendrick, who succeeded Whitey Burnham as Dartmouth's lacrosse coach, has the experienced manpower to improve on the 4-8 record of 1969 but the Green will need consistency in the midfield if they are to do it. Pete Harter, the captain and goalie, is a seasoned three-year regular who may rank with the best in the Ivy League. Defenseman Trip Dorkey was an All-Ivy second team choice last spring and leads the perimeter in front of Harter. Mike Diaz and Rich Sammis are the top attackmen and Bill Johnson heads the midfielders, who should be bolstered by sophomore Bob Bassett.
In tennis, Coach John Kenfield has the tools to give Dartmouth its fourth straight winning season since he arrived in 1967. Co-Captains Geoff Dyer and Jock McKernan will probably play 1-2, with Ed Cranch and sophomore Brian Williams providing versatile support.
