By press time, spring vacation will be history, Tuck students who were exposed to approximately 200 companies during the nine-week placement program will have criss-crossed the country visiting a great variety of these companies, and the decision process will be underway. It is always a fascinating process to observe because the stakes are high, the choices wide and the future bright. Though the present state of the economy will have some effect, it is nevertheless safe to forecast another banner year for Tuck graduates. The competition from the firms which recruited at Tuck this year was as keen as ever and within a few months the well-educated Indians from the hills will be moving out into the big cities.
On the alumni front we recently enjoyed a successful evening with the New York Tuck Alumni Association and are looking forward to the March 31 meeting of the Chicago Tuck Alumni Association. In New York, Dean John Hennessey and Senator Jacob Javits discussed educational and governmental affairs in a knowledgeable and entertaining manner. Chairman Charles J. Urstadt T'51 and his fine committee hosted a group of over 350 alumni and guests at the Waldorf. In spite of some unexpected competition from Messrs. Nixon and Pompidou on the same evening in the same hotel, all went smoothly and with a minimum of confusion.
Turning to alumni news - again a shortage of articles - the first report concerns Howard N. Newman T'57 who has been named Medicaid Director for the federal government. Howard has been associate administrator of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia since 1965. His new title is Commissioner of HEW's Medical Services Administration.
We have also been advised that Danforth A. Hall T'53 has joined Morgan Guaranty Trust Co. as a vice president. Dan was formerly controller of E. R. Squibb & Sons in New Jersey. Ralph W. Spofford T'63 has been named Manager, Quality Control, for the Split Ballbearing Division of MPB Corporation in Lebanon, N. H. Another Tuck graduate in the same company, Charles A. Mortensen T'62, has been appointed Manager, Manufacturing Engineering. He has been with MPB, the parent company in Keene, N. H. in various engineering and management positions.
William C. Noyes T'68 has been appointed security analyst of the State Mutual Assurance Co. of America in Worcester, Mass. Bill joined State Mutual immediately following graduation from Tuck. Robert A.Levinson T'46, chairman of the Duplan Corporation in New York, has been in the news recently as his firm expands in North and South Carolina. An aggressive entrepreneur in the textile industry, Levinson heads a firm which in the last few years has acquired 11 concerns and lifted its volume to $125 million a year.
Edward F. McLaughlin T'42 has resigned as general counsel of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority in Boston and will join the law firm of Herrick, Smith, Donald, Farley and Ketchum. Involved with the MBTA since 1962, Ed is a former lieutenant governor of Massachusetts and president of the Boston City Council and is one of the best known Democrats in the state.
That does it for news this month and we'll hope for a heavier mailbag for the balance of the year.
Best regards from the hills.
