By this time next month, hopefully, spring will have broken through the cold of winter and it will not have come too soon. I know it must have been quite a frigid winter inasmuch as most of you out there had hands so frosty that holding a writing implement was extremely difficult. How can I tell? Well, the stack of news has dwindled down very low and the postman has been complaining that if the mail to this address doesn't pick up he is going to take my name off his regular call list.
Don Meltzer has been elected a vice president of the United Fruit Company Division of United Brands. He has been associated with United Fruit since 1967, and was elected division controller in 1969. Don holds an MBA from Tuck School which partly accounts for his business acumen. He is also a Certified Public Accountant and belongs to state and national CPA organizations. Don's headquarters are in Boston and the Meltzer family lives in Sudbury, Mass. His wife Polly is the former Mary Douglas Seelye.
Occasionally one of you in the warmer climes comes through as did Bryce F. Bastion who jots that he is now living in Makati, Rizal, Philippines. Bryce has been general manager for the Singer Company in the Philippines since December, 1969 and I don't know much more than that at the moment. Needless to say, right now the Philippines sounds a more attractive location than New York City where, if it isn't slushy, it's on strike.
Though I usually try to avoid repeating names too frequently in this column, sometimes changes occur that have to be updated in case any of you start to look someone up and find that he has moved on Such is the case with Thomas D. Sayles about whom I recently reported. Tom has moved over from being the youngest senior vice president at the Manufacturers Han- over Trust Company in New York to become executive vice president and chief administrative officer of the Summit and Elizabeth Trust Company. Not only did Tom improve his rank, but more mundanely he also lopped about two hours a day off his commuting time. It is quite apparent that Tom administers very well and we wish him good fortune in his new position.
Education continues to attract a significant number of our classmates and it is a most important sphere, as you all will agree. Last June the Colorado Association of School Boards added David Martin to its staff in the capacity of communication and public information specialist. Dave has been executive assistant to the state education commissioner since 1968 and has served in research capacities at the University of Colorado, University of Denver, and at Dartmouth. He also was a governmental affairs reporter for radio and wire services in both Nebraska and New York and holds a degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
In another part of the forest Boston University's School of Medicine has appointed Dr. Geoffrey A. Talbot, a native of Natick, Mass., to its faculty. Geoff had received his initial appointment as clinical associate in urology at the same school some time back, and holds an M.D. degree from Tufts University.
Bob Curtis is now the Rev. Robert P. Curtis, C.S.P., a member of the Paulist Fathers Community following his ordination on January 16 in New York City. Terrence Cardinal Cooke, Archbishop of New York, was the ordaining prelate. "Father Bob" entered the Novitiate of the Paulist Community in 1965, and during the period of his seminary training served as a prison chaplain; worked with narcotics addicts, retarded children, and inner-city youngsters; and co-directed a youth hostel in the Adirondack Mountains.
Some of the information coming to me is quite cryptic. On a simple plain 3 x 5 index card is a handwritten notation that Richard J. Collins received an M.B.A. degree from Rutgers University, June 3, 1970. Nothing, as you can see from this communication, is left to the imagination; but I would certainly like to hear from Dick to learn where he is applying his talents.
Another industry which has exerted a major pull on our class is the insurance industry. Last June came word that William D. Donovan had been named director of Trade Association Products for the American Mutual Insurance Companies. His new duties include the marketing of Workmen's Compensation, life, health, and hospitalization insurance, as well as pensions on a group basis to associations of businesses involved in the same trade or industry. Bill joined American in 1966 as division group specialist of the Atlantic Division and was later transferred to Boston as field sales manager. Bill, his wife Elaine and four daughters make their home in Wakefield, Mass., where he has been active in the P.T.A., Kiwanis, and various insurance organizations.
Up the coast a bit last May Robert B.Durham Jr. was married at Falmouth Foreside. Me., to Elizabeth Lee Parker of that city. Bob holds a law degree from Columbia University and a Master of Laws as well from N. Y. University. The Durhams will make their home in the Philadelphia area where Bob is associated with the law firm of Mason and Ringe.
Winding up the news for this month is the word that Air Force Major William B. Sherman received the Meritorious Service Medal at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii. Bill distinguished himself as an air operations officer in the flight management branch of the directorate of training at Headquarters Pacific Air Forces, Hickam Field. PACAF is headquarters for all air operations in Southeast Asia, the Far East and Pacific area. He has completed a tour of duty in Vietnam and holds the rating of senior pilot plus an M.B.A. from George Washington University 1965. He is married and has three children.
Well, another month has come and gone and I hope you haven't been too put off for my frequent requests for information. You see, it is much easier to fill the page if one has something to say, and from your standpoint, it might be easier to read. The address remains the same so let's hear from you.
