SPRING PREVIEW
APRIL 1971 JACK DEGANGE

Dartmouth's 1970 baseball team reeled off 21 straight victories and whirled to the Eastern League title, the NCAA District One crown, and fifth place in the College World Series. There are 13 lettermen returning from that spectacular campaign but Coach Tony Lupien's team won't quote any odds on duplicating the 1970 effort. With lettermen returning at every position and a seasoned mound staff that is deeper than in many years, the Indians should be a strong contender to defend the EIBL title that has resided in Hanover for three of the past four years.

Dartmouth's heavyweight crew also enjoyed its most successful season ever in 1970, winning three cup races, finishing fourth in the Eastern Sprints and third in the IRA championships before competing in the Royal Henley Regatta. Only one man is missing from that boat and Coach Peter Gardner should find out if the ability to improve is there as the Indians wrap up their third visit to Alabama for spring training with racing against Columbia, Jacksonville, Purdue, and Alabama.

The success of baseball and crew was equalled by Bill Johnson's golfers last spring. The Indians, also laden with six experienced seniors (Captain Marsh Gavre could be one of the nation's best collegians), will be defending the Eastern Intercollegiate title. They have a string of 23 dual meet victories in progress.

Coach Dudley Hendrick will try to improve on a dismal first year as leader of Dartmouth lacrosse and Captain Mike Diaz, a capable scorer, will be a key for the Indians.

In track, the weightmen should pick up where they left off during the indoor season and Coach Ken Weinbel will have significant help with the return of Captain Bob Brown (he spent the winter term in Guatemala), who was 13th in the NCAA decathalon last year and ranks as one of Dartmouth's top athletes this year.

Juniors Brian Williams and Lloyd Ucko should be the top men on the tennis ladder as Coach John Kenfield's team bids to improve on last year's 9-9 record.
