A short, wet summer gone, together with the Olympics. September caught in the grip of this humorless presidential campaign. Where oh where is there relief from the tragedy, the tedium and the overburden of opinion? In the American League, of all

You know — baseball! Imagine! In this day of synthetic turf, climate-controlled hippodromes and double-knit undies, a few self-styled boy sof Autumn have brought a withering pennant race back into the game's oldest and most endearing haunts-Fenway Park, Baltimore's Memorial Stadium Tiger Stadium and Yankee Stadium. Hoary, scuffed ballparks every one, they do seem to recall less complicated days.

Detroit reliever Chuck Seelbach has contributed his share of heroics. As of September 19, he has eight wins, eleven saves and a 3.10 earned run average. Does it seem so long ago that Chuck and the rest of us pitched water balloons out of third story windows?

Bruce Say lor, in the meantime, has forsaken the diamond for the University of Miami Law School, where rumor has it he will begin this fall.

Loose ends from the summer mail bag. (Actually, I do not have a mail bag, just loose ends.) Jack Roberts married the former Peggy James May 6 in Napexvilie, Ill. In attendance: Clark Beier and PeteElliott — ushers; Roger Grimes — panderer. Mr. and Ms. Roberts spent the summer in Europe, and expected to squat in Denver this fall. Roger, who sent these tidings, is at the University of Tennessee Law School ". . . and at times wondering if it is worth it Still the timeless quest for relevance, guess." By this time he should have married Emily Bryan of Lookout Mountain, Tenn.

George LeMaistre has joined the news staff of the Delta Democrat-Times m Cleveland. George has worked on the staffs of U. S. Representatives Bob Jones of Alabama and John Culver of lowa. At the National Convention of the United States Jaycees in Atlanta, PeterRobinson was named one of the nations five Outstanding First Year Jaycees. Peter had previously been named Outstanding Jaycee for the State of Florida. The honor required written and oral examinations. Among the projects which he directed in Winter Park. Fla., was an effort to introduce fluoride into state water supplies.

Jim Aukerman, up for reelection to the Rhode Island Assembly this fall, elected to abscond to the Continent with the campaign funds this summer. Auk attended the U.N. Law of the Seas Conference at Geneva in July, and then toured the balmy climes of southern Europe. Back to law school and legislatin' by now.

Bill Cantlin and Jane Fowler Horton were married May 13 in Guilford, Conn. Bill's wife is a 1968 graduate of Lasell Junior College.

On April 1, Joe Schwarzmann and Nanette Ashley were married in Hanover. Joe has finished his second year at Dartmouth Med and will be at Harvard next year. Harry Morgan and wife Kate will make the same move this fall.

Bill Koenig has decided to work fulltime on a community communications project in Columbus, Ind. The idea is to provide access to the local "marketplace of ideas" via cable T.V. for anyone who has something to say. Bill says all they need is

Please note once again the address change. I am intending to leave the country for a period unknown and points unanticipated. I'm not sure how many classmates are scattered around the planet; perhaps there are enough to open a class notes foreign bureau." Anyway, send domestic scuttle to the Philadelphia address.

Finally, a special thanks to TomEnglish, without whom the column would be altogether vapid. He never mentions what he's up to, but he must spend a good deal of time peering in through the windows of the rest of us. You might try a little voyeurism yourself.
