The annual fall meeting of the Class of 1917 was held at the Hanover Inn September 29 and 30. Chairman BobBoynton called a meeting of the Executive Committee at the Inn on Friday afternoon. Nine members were present. We missed EdEarle, Waltman Walters, Sherm Smith and Roger Stone. On doctor's advice Sherm reluctantly passed up the meeting, but we are pleased to learn that his health has improved and he will be right on the job to send you an early report of class doings in his inimitable Sentry. Roger Stone thought it best to remain at home with Carol who is not too well. Detailed reports were made by the secretary and treasurer and you will receive more data from classmate Vic Smith along with your annual bill for class dues. The same committee which was appointed in June will continue to explore possibilities for the establishment of a 1917 scholarship fund. It is interesting to note that as far as the College is concerned, our class is proposing something quite novel.
The roster of the Class for the afternoon and evening festivities included the following: Barney and Adele Thielscher, Norman and Mary McCulloch, Phil and Jo Evans, George and Florence Clark, Vic and Irene Smith, Slats and Helen Baxter, Bob and Anita Scott, Al and Maude Edgerton and George Allison, traveling the longest distance to be with us. It was pleasant to have the younger generation represented by Dorothy McCulloch, Norm and Mary's daughter-in-law, and Virginia Bradley, who came with her parents, Vic and Irene. We all missed Sandy Lynch, who would have made it had he not had the misfortune to break his wrist shortly before the weekend. Helen Brooks dropped by and told us that Don was doing quite well but needed rather close attention. Classmate WaltCarr, who has been slightly under the weather during recent months, showed up briefly and we were pleased to hear that things are going better with him at his new home in Amherst, N. H. Phil Evans had arranged transportation for Roger and Jane Brown of the class of 1905, residents of his home town. We were delighted to have them present. Their interest and vigor were an inspiration to us all.
We had been hopeful that the Towlers would be able to attend. A letter from Lucile, however, indicated that Gene had had a serious bout with pneumonia and was still having around-the-clock nursing care. Lucile has sent us pamphlets recounting the virtues of retirement in Sun City Center, and says that Gene thoroughly enjoys the music which is generated at their residence by herself and other talented musicians in the community. We wish Gene full recovery and hope that he can join us at a futue reunion date.
We were gratified to learn that our popular treasurer, Vic Smith, has been invited by Fritz Hier, Director of Public Programs for Dartmouth, to represent the College at the inaugural exercises for President Loring Edward Hart at Norwich University, Northfield, Vt., on October 10. Congratulations, Vic!
Along with reports of activities, there seems always a sad note to be added. News of the passing of James E. Burns and Samuel R. MacKillop has just been received. Detailed obituaries will be forthcoming.
