The business of education was in full swing at Hanover this summer. Mixed with the increasing numbers of coeds were the customary core of middle-aged registrants at Alumni College, catching up on selected courses as well as enjoying afternoons of vacation. The only complaint about business came from the barbers and shoe salesmen.

For many of us New Englanders, the summer season would not be complete without the perennial gathering sponsored by host Bob Burroughs '21, at his country estate in Canterbury, N.H. Along with younger alumni of the early '20s, we spotted Jim Coffin '16, Tudor Bradley '20, and Eben Wallace '20. It was a fine holiday, with the opportunity to reune with Dartmouth friends, old and new.

In the waning hours of the Alumni Fund Drive, Len Reade gave it just the extra punch which helped push 1917's record up a notch. Class participation was excellent and Len and his agents merit our congratulations.

Class Officers' meetings are long over, but we wish to report that our class was represented at the College by Bob Boynton, Vic Smith, and your secretary. In our department, Charles Widmayer gave a detailed and most interesting review of his record over the years as editor of the AlumniMagazine. His fairness in presenting material both pro and con, regarding controversial issues confronting the College and the alumni will be long remembered. We shall miss him.

A quick trip to Maine found our roommate. Harold A. (Friday) Bean, settled happily in his new home in Norway. Friday and Blanche are avid bridge players. Also, if things get a bit dull around Norway, they can invite any number of their 19 grandchildren for a holiday.

Hal Bidwell will move from the West to North Haverhill, N.H., this fall. Hal's sister reports that the doctor is still busy and has decided to be with her in this thriving village near Hanover. We hope to see you at the fall games and reunions, Hal.

Time brings its changes and inevitable losses. It is with deep sorrow that I report the passing of Sherm Smith, our editor of the Sentry. While we knew that Sherm has been in poor health for some time, the news of his death came as a distinct shock to all of us. Also, we are sorry to report the death of Harold (Red) Wendell on May 24. Your secretary has expressed the sympathy of the Class to their families. Fuller accounts will appear in the

Alumni Magazine as soon as information is available.
