It's been many moons since Dartmouth's wrestling team had a winning record. By mid-January, however, the mark for the grapplers stood at 4-1 and first-year coach Jerry Berndt could place responsibility for most of the Green's success on the rugged shoulders of Chuck Estin and Ted Thompson.

"They are something else to watch," said Berndt. Estin, from Boulder, Colo., has been outstanding in the 190-pound event, pinning six of seven opponents.

Thompson, at 177, has been equally tough, losing only once (his lone loss as a collegiate wrestler) against Rhode Island and combining with Estin to give Dartmouth one of New England's finest tandems.

In squash, Dartmouth took a 2-1 record into a mid-January break.

The Indians won twice before Christmasand then, as expected, were "hipped by powerful Harvard, 9-0.

Dartmouth's track season began with the third annual USTFF Eastern Regional Meet at Leverone Field House, an event highlighted by the field house record performance of Dr. Delano Meriwether in the 50-yard dash. His time of 5.2 seconds broke a nine-year old record set by Gerry Ashworth '63.

A week later the dual season opened with a 65-44 win over Colgate. It was a meet featured by a solid win in the shotput by Wayne Moody and coupled with strong performances in the mile by Eric Potter (4:12.9) and in the two-mile by Tom Shiland (9:08.5).
