The eighth annual Pow-Wow, held on March 14 at the Hotel Sheraton in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. was most successful. The sunny mild weather was perfect, the ocean in front of the hotel calm, and classmates and wives elbowing their way up to the bar in the hotel penthouse included Monk and Ethel Cameron, Mort and Gertrude Coon, John and Kay Cunningham, Cliff and AdelaideDaniels, Al Gottschaldt, Ed and LukeHealey, Jasper and Ann Johnston,Charles and Bernice Jones, Tom and Martie Jones, Steve and Dorothy Mahoney, Reed and Hitty Montgomery, Syl and Minetta Morey, Ben and Betty Mug-ridge, Howie and Ann Park, Spud and Mabel Proctor, Mel and Frieda Southwick,Julius and Janet Van Raalte, HughWhipple and Dick and Marian White. Tom and Martie Jones brought Martie's sister, Mrs. Collette Orr, and the Moreys guests were Mr. and Mrs. Walter Andree, parents of a Dartmouth undergraduate.
Guests from other classes who added to the success of the Pow-Wow were Bob Scott '17, King Cole '19, Muriel and Guy Cogswell '19, Josephine and Gugger Fiske '20, and Eunice and George Loehr '20.
This year the favors for the gals, the product of Martie Jones' imagination and efforts, turned out to be useful key rings attached to a small beaded doll with a shamrock background. They were received with enthusiasm. After an excellent roast beef dinner Al Gottschaldt and SylMorey spoke briefly about the problems faced by the College because of the requests made by Indians that all reference to Indians by athletic teams and colleges be discontinued. The complimentary tickets for the cruise aboard the Jungle Queen were won by Walter Andree; the tickets for Ocean World were won by Howie Park, Martie Jones, and Bob Scott. Gugger Fiske won the bottle of excellent bourbon donated by the Hotel Sheraton. Janet Van Raalte, Ann Park and Jules Van Raalte won first, second and third prizes in the money raffle.
At the conclusion of the Pow Wow Tom Jones was reelected chairman for 1973. He announced that the gathering would be held next year at the same place on Tuesday, March 13, and invited everybody to hurry back.
Sorry to report that Paul and HelenMinder did not come, for Helen still needs time for better health. Also, Markev had to back out for the same reason.
Thanks, Howie Park, for the above report. Do our Indian students object to our calling such a gathering a Pow Wow? Surely that is what it was in the best Indian tradition and thus do we give them honor and admiration in adopting their symbols. Rita Norton writes Stump Barr her deep appreciation for the book the Class gave to the library in her husband Ralph's name.
We learn that Francis F. Griswold is now at 365 Third Ave, North Naples, Fla. 33940, and that Mrs. R. Tryon Tyrrell of Daytona Beach is deceased.
Paul Erwin attended the March annual Dartmouth Philadelphia Club Dinner and had the pleasure of seeing his son Paul '49 installed as president of the Club.
We regret to report that on March 25, Louis H. C. Huntoon passed away. Sympathy on behalf of the Class has been sent to the widow. In this or another issue will appear an obituary on Louis.
Don't forget Baron George von Kopff and his tribe of class agents are on the hunting trails for this year's Alumni Fund, so make their task easy by giving now and generously.
