Mannie Sprague, our head agent, advises that the recent change of administration in Washington has meant his return to the practice of law with Stein, Mitchell & Mezines, 1800 M Street N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036 (Tel. 202-737-7777). Mannie is already hard at work improving '33's giving to and participation in the 1977 Alumni Fund campaign, and he sincerely invites all class members to take an active part in the campaign over and above being a contributor. Do let him know if you are interested in helping.

In their letter to class agents dated November 15, 1976, the Alumni Fund staff compared the 1976 Dartmouth campaign favorably with those of Princeton, Harvard, and Yale. Dartmouth's campaign costs of 7% of total fund were strikingly low by comparison, as was the number of professional staff (4), and the number of volunteers (4,090) was practically double those of the other colleges. Also, Dartmouth, with 58 per cent alumni participation, is second in the nation only to Haverford College. I thought these statistics would be of interest to those of you who may not have seen the staff letter.

Bob Grow has been elected chairman of Fred S. James & Company of Michigan, subsidiary of Fred S. James & Company, Inc., international insurance brokerage firm head- quartered in Chicago, with more than 100 offices in the United States and overseas. Bob, a veteran of 40 years' experience in the field, was formerly president of Grow, Keller and Freese, Inc., one of Michigan's oldest insurance agencies, which was acquired by James in 1972.

In a personal note, Milt Neaman has confirmed his retirement at the end of 1976 from Columbia Broadcasting System, Inc., New York City, where he has been serving as general attorney. Milt also commented upon the fact that Gene Kaplan and his family live about a half-mile from his house. Gene is now retired after a distinguished career in pediatrics and is an ardent boatman and fisherman, as well as the proud father of an eight-year-old son.

The Alumni Records Office and Mrs. Ruby S. Field, widow of Ralph H. Field D'35, have advised of the death of Norm Payne, of Brookline, Mass., on December 5, 1976. The Class extends sincere belated sympathy to his wife, Gudrun, and family. An obituary will appear in this or a future issue.

The first issue, dated December, 1976, of the "Secretaries Letter," a publication for class secretaries, has been received from Steve Quigley, secretary of the Class of 1973 and president of the organization responsible for the publication. It is to be published on a quarterly basis and is intended as a sounding-board for common concerns and stimulating thoughts and suggestions among class secretaries. Among other things, the secretaries have been asked to suggest names of members about whom vignettes might be written for publication in the .Magazine. These will be full-page occasional spreads in sketch form on various alumni with stimulating and provocative backgrounds. If you have any suggestions you think should be considered, or if you have any observations, questions, or suggestions regarding my handling of the class notes, please let me know.

In a holiday greeting, Emily Hobbs added that she spent the holidays with her daughter Dottie and her family in Scarsdale, N.Y., and that she had been in Germany for three weeks last October, one of them with her son David and his wife and two-year-old son. David is in Germany until next spring doing some doctoral research.

How about more news in 1977 about what you are doing!
