Broadcasting from Hartford, Conn., in the last days of January, 1973, the big news is that QuechFrench is home from the hospital where he was combed over from top to bottom and all he lost was a favorite tab on his left cheek and a sizeable bit of money. The diagnosis of his recent illness still seems to be a bit uncertain, at least that is his report.
Charlie Gately, following his 83rd birthday, says these milestones are beginning to scare him. He even thinks he is a candidate for the Last of the Mohicans. (We were unaware of his Indian ancestry.) However, he had a gala celebration on that day, his children and grandchildren coming from across the country and completing an attendance of 90 percent. Following that "turnover" he had in his auto at the time of the last reunion, Charlie informs us that when it rains he gets "those old miseries." There are others of us in the same boat, old man. With his phlebitis one can see that life isn't all roses and birthdays for him.
As we previously recorded, Elizabeth Park sent out Christmas greetings to 97 widows with 16 responses, many of which conveyed the hope of making the 1973 reunion in June. From EvaPlumer who writes she is active in church affairs, civic music, Civic Theatre, Loch Haven Art Center, and swims each week with a group of "girls," synchronized to music, and is taking a class at Rollins College in Land Management in Central Florida. How's that for a program? Dorothy Frothingham says her business keeps her so busy that she seldom gets away but "some day I hope to see Dartmouth." Jo Adams puzzled over the release from the College which included a line that for the Classes 50 and over there would be a charge of $25. Our president Connie Snow says this is a good proposition as it includes several meals and many functions worth their while. BillShapleigh has already reserved space in Brown Hall for us, so let's plan on it.
Fletcher Clark's wife, Marguerite, now has a plastic hip and is getting along quite well, using a cane around the house. Hal Baker has had some kind of an operation which he survived quite well, except for one complication. Katie is hoping to see that both of them make Hanover in June.
The sad news is that Al Miller's widow died in 1969, only a few weeks after Al left us. SydClark's Mardi died on this New Years Eve. Her long illness has been a great hardship for Syd who has our deepest sympathy. Finally, on New Years Day, Boss Geller passed away in the hospital in Owego. This is a great loss to our Class as Boss was a regular at our reunions where his fine voice added so much to the life and enjoyment of all present. Our sympathy goes out to the two sons and their families.
