On January 31 word came from Chuck Baker that Peggy Stevens has created a permanent endowment fund, the income from which is to be used for the purchase of books and other materials for Baker Library in memory of her late husband Bob Stevens. Each volume is to be designated by a special bookplate which Librarian Edward Connery Lathem arranged to have designed by Rudolph Ruzicka, one of the country's leading designers and creator of the College's Bicentennial Medal. Appropriately, the plate features the New Pine, one of Bob's dreams, and will therefore be a particularly fitting memorial for him and should be a source of great pride for the Class. This thoughtful and generous endowment is but one more evidence of Peggy's interest in and affection for the Class of 1927, and we can all be very grateful that we can call her a member of the Class. Memorial gifts sent by classmates after Bob's death will be added to Peggy's original fund unless otherwise restricted.
Chuck also added that Peggy will come to Reunion with Marie Baker and himself, and that good news was confirmed by a card from Peggy saying that she would be on hand. Great! And we'll all be looking forward to seeing these good people.
Returns are coming a bit more slowly now, but as of January 31 the count of those who plan definitely to be in Hanover for June 11-13 includes 67 men, 63 wives, and 2 widows, but 74 more members are in various degrees-of uncertainty about their plans and with good luck a substantial number of them may make it.
Joe Gintzler advised that he had no news at present but sent Happy New Year to all '27ers. Mim Bell reported in January that Ben "has been housebound a month with pneumonia (even in Florida!) but coming along all right now - playing a new organ and out in the sunshine, etc."
Bruce and Phyrne McKennan "were away September 21-November 2, London, Nairobi, (flying safari 3 weeks), Salisbury, Johannesburg, Capetown, Rio de Janeiro, so skipped Hanover." They may, however, make Reunion in June.
A card from Sid Voice said that he enjoyed seeing some of "the boys" at the '27-'28-'29 New York dinner in January where Paul Hannah also reported seeing Reg and A. B. Vincent, Oren and Inez Herwitz, Rog and Marion Bury, Sam and Allice Wormser, Hank and Ruth Bayles, Frank Strong, Tom Gillespie, and Brick Stone. Sid went on to say, "I'm now a city dweller - sold my house in Lawrence, L.I., in September, bought a new apartment I'll occupy in May or June. No retirement, South or West for me. Very unlikely I'll be in Hanover in June for business and moving reasons.... I am proud to be the sponsor of a cute young girl in Freshman class, granddaughter of a friend. Would love to see the campus as a coed institution."
There's still time to make plans for June 11-13 Do try to be on hand for all the great doings!
