The mail bag has been pretty light in the past 30 days; your secretary hopes that all of you will take note of the above address, and get those cards 'n' letters rolling in. All we know is what we read in the papers.

Capt. Pat Kennedy, having completed (would you believe?) 29 years of active duty in the U.S. Navy, has announced his retirement from active service. At the time of his retirement on January 31. Pat was comptroller of the Naval Electronic Systems Command, which was his fourth tour of duty in the Washington, D.C., area. His duties otherwise took him to most parts of the world (in 1964, Pat picked up an M.B.A. degree from George Washington University).

We were delighted to receive (and recommend that everyone of you subscribe for) a copy of a remarkable publication entitled "A Compilation of 'Editors Viewpoint' from the NorthernVirginia Sun from September 1971 through August 1972." Editor and Publisher of the Northern Virginia Sun is our own Herman J. ("Obie") Obermayer who is enjoying to the utmost the uniquely personal relationship which can be created between a community editor and his readers. Just to give you a couple of quickies from this remarkable compilation:

"Education Goals Need To Be Defined"... "What is needed is fewer studies of curriculum budgets and physical facilities and more honest inquiries into educational goals. If we define our goals, the teachers would find their work infinitely easier, and the students - who are the only reason for an educational system in the beginning - would find their educational experience more satisfying and rewarding.

"Leader's Dilemma; Right vs. Interests" ... "All public officials must understand that the narrow interests of the people they represent as trustees are paramount and they should be compromised only in very unusual - once-in-a-lifetime circumstances. It is usually just as wrong not to advance the parochial interests of your constituency for reasons you believe moral as it is to accept a bribe or a strings-attached campaign contribution."

Any one interested (and all of you should be) may write to Obie for a copy at 1227 N.Ivy Street, Arlington, Virginia 22210.

While we are in the area of quotes, the latest Bulletin out of Hanover contains some most revealing information about the planning and thinking for the future which is going on there. A current publication is an irreverent collection of student views of the current Dartmouth Course Guide, listing the academic offerings for the year, and known as "Kemeny Krispies."

As many of you have learned, there will be four home football games this fall, including Yale, this being the third trip by the Bulldogs to Hanover since 1884. For the benefit of those (such as ourselves) in the New York area, who are fond of fighting traffic on Derby Avenue in New Haven once a year, President Kemeny has offered the following explanation. ... "I know the arguments against it: we lose money (Harvard and Yale have larger stadia) and for many alumni, particularly those in New;: England, it is much more convenient to attend a game in Boston or New Haven than it is in Hanover. Nevertheless, I feel that the arguments on the other side are absolutely overwhelming. You must think of it, at least I must, first from the point of view of the players. What happens in our present schedule is that Dartmouth plays four games out of nine at home in alternate years and only three games at home in the other years. And in the years when we play only three home games, the football players have to travel on six weekends during a ten-week term. That is a tremendous handicap to them in their academic work. It doesn't do their football playing any good either.

" know that one must take into account financial considerations, and we certainly want to take into account convenience for our most loyal fans our own alumni, but 1 feel a compromise had to be made. And I believe that the new schedule we are trying to work out, with Yale and Harvard to play in Hanover once every four years so that we have at least one major home game and a minimum of four home games every year, is the fairest and most just arrangement possible."

We recently received a slightly outdated copy of Discount Store News, containing a handsome (but nevertheless factual) picture of Stan Feldberg, and his cousin Sumner, president and executive vice president, respectively, of Zayre The accompanying article describes the founding of the Zayre chain and its fantastic growth under the leadership of these two cousins; its 225 stores are now approaching the $1 billion volume mark

Recognizing the lag time between preparation and publication, by the time all of you read this your secretary and fellow class officers expect to have enjoyed Class Officers' Weekend in Hanover on May 4 and 5. We'll be reporting the results as promptly as possible.
