Here's some news from Cedric Kam for which we are grateful: Gary Hobin has finally gotten married! His wife Liz, formerly Elizabeth Marie Anne Neale, is a graduate of Cameron College in Oklahoma, and has done graduate work in education at North Carolina State University. Cedric heartily approves. The last I knew, Lt. Hobin was currently assigned to the 6th Psychological Operations Battalion at Fort Bragg, and the coupie was married under the traditional Arch of Sabres. Cedric and Betsy went out to Fort Sill where the wedding was held, with Cedric as best man. In his job with the 6th PSYOP Battalion Gary has already made two trips to the Middle East. It seems he was able to convince the Army that a Dartmouth BA in history, and an MA in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Chicago shouldn't go to waste. Cedric is assigned as an instructor in government to the Civil Affairs School, U.S. Army Institute for Military Assistance. Thanks for the news, and best wishes to all four of you.

Dick Harwood has been promoted to assistant trust officer at the First National Bank of Colorado Springs not long ago. He was formerly with the business development section of the trust department, after receiving his J.D. degree from Duke University School of Law and passing the Colorado Bar examination in 1971.

Another banker in the Class is James (Leckie)Rives. After two years of commuting and working in New York City, he and wife Vicki are taking advantage of a rare opportunity to return to the Hanover community where Leckie is working at the Dartmouth National Bank as a loan officer. While looking for land to build a house, the Rives have leased an apartment two doors down from my own. A great temptation for a Class of 1968 party! Formerly, Leckie worked for the Irving Trust as a credit analyst and completed the company's executive training program. He tells me that he is not sure how he got into banking, since he received an M.A. degree in International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. I'm not sure either, Leckie, but it seems to suit you.

A Happy New Year to John McNamara arrived some months ago from Rob and BarbaraMcCormick. Rob is zone sales manager of McCormick and Co., Inc. and second son Billy was born there in lovely downtown Pittsburgh.

Recently jawed with good old Steve "Monk"Williams. Several columns have followed the Class Ski Jock from adventure to snowy adventure. However, the latest escapades in the U.S.S.R. are worth a small novel. Antiquated busses, late lunches with mysterious or nonexistent explanations were par for the cross country course. Monk was Nordic Program coordinator and cross-country coach with the U.S. Ski Team on a full-time basis. In late December and early January the team's tour took them to West Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Just recently they were at the European Junior Championships in Scandinavian countries and Leningrad, Russia. Maybe sometime soon I can get him to put all the details down on paper, but meanwhile Steve is off to complete his law degree at Yale.

Another Williams by the name of Rick wrote to our class prexy to announce he expects to receive an M.S. in Environmental Science in May from the New York State College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Rick and wife Lisa will be moving to the Pacific Northwest this spring. Lisa has been enrolled in the Dartmouth Master of Arts in Liberal Studies at Dartmouth and supporting Rick by'teaching art to little kids.

Jerry and Jeannie Murtagh haven't stayed too far from the fold. Jerry has been working on an M.A. in political science at the University of New Hampshire and should have it this summer. He will go on for his Ph.D. and the rest is to be decided.

After serving in the Navy in Washington, D.C., until last April 6, John Everett has joined the ranks of civilians again. Next fall he will be in law school in Boston or New England ("Anyone who will have me."). After John's release from active duty he plans to start the arduous but rewarding hike of the Appalachian Trail from Springer Mountain in northern Georgia. He should get to Hanover about the first of August and finish on the top of Katahdin the first of September. He'll be walking most of the trail alone, so anyone who would like to join him, he won't mind the company How many pair of shoes do you own, John?

And finally, Jamie Newton has been working for the American Friends Service Committee as an organizer for peace and the justice programs they operate for the past four years. He visited Cuba in 1969; then traveled around talking about the visit (including Dartmouth in January 1970). This past spring and summer he worked with the Pentagon Papers defense. Now Jamie is a graduate student in social psychology at Stanford. His major interests there are the dynamics of power differentials in interpersonal situations, particularly in prisons and the armed forces. Also on Jamie's interest list are studies in the politics of behavior control, attitude modification, creation of the illusion of choice, and manipulations of the perception of self-directedness. Jamie is with the Psychology Dept., Stanford University, Stanford, Calif. 94305. That's all this month. Write in now and see your name in print.
