White the rest of you were packing your levees against further inroads by the river, planting corn or whatever, Carlton and I made a pilgrimage north to the Class Officers Weekend. Of course for Carleton it was more like a strut downtown and for this writer it wasn't very far either. Yet the Class Officers' Weekend really is sort of an annual pilgrimage for many and it has been most enjoyable these past two years getting to know Dartmouth men from many other areas of the country.

Of course I'm getting to know Carleton a little bit better, too, and the next time he suggests that we go to a "nice little restaurant over in Woodstock" I'll know better. No Four Aces this place! Woodstock has changed a lot from the days when it was just part way to Skidmore; The Butternut Tree still honors American Express, though, so the pain is no sharper than it would be at Four Seasons!

Because Robin's parents have retired to Hanover we probably have spent more weekends on the Campus during the past year than ever as an undergraduate. A blind man can even feel the change! It never ceases to astound me that an organization consisting of so many diverse elements (faculty, administration, and alumni) can make such constant and unceasing headway. True, the Turbulent '6os turned many of us off but the fact that the College can survive and thrive in spite of it all is a real testimonial to the caliber of the leadership that is running the place. It just seems as though now, finally, students, faculty, and administration all seem to be going to the same direction and are stepping to the beat of the same drummer.

Ten percent never get the word, though ... Hanover's 1973 Watergate North is (would you believe it) the Beta House? True, the House that saw the unravelling of Janet Pilgrim during our day has finally had the doors padlocked shut because the brothers were at last apprehended for acting in a conduct unbecoming officers on patrol on the second floor of a women's dorm! Of course this aforementioned announcement didn't tear up the majority of the returning alumni but there were those of us who smiled inwardly, knowingly.

Our foreign scholar, Yuan Kit Ha is graduating this June. After graduation Yuan will probably attend MIT or Columbia Graduate School. His major while at Dartmouth was physics and during this past year he has been an Honors student!

Yuan's graduation creates an opportunity for another '56 Scholar and Egil Stigum solicits all members of the Class to help him in his role as Chairman of the Foreign Scholarship Program Initially there is the selection process and subsequently the educational rounding process ... that of having our foreign scholar into our homes for vacations ... longer periods of time, etc. Now that Dartmouth has year-round operation as well as the Dartmouth Plan there may well be some excellent opportunities for the Class to serve our "scholar" even more effectively than we have been able to in the past. Egil's address is: 62 Forest Park Drive, Nashua, N.H. 03060. Telephone (603) 883-4774.

For coming Class events ... an Executive Committee meeting at the Dartmouth Club (Hotel Commodore) N.Y. City, Wednesday, June 13 at 6:30 p.m. Although it will be impossible to get an agenda to everyone, please come if you can and add your two cents' worth! Wives, too, by all means.

October 13 in Hanover for the Penn game Mini-Reunion time once again under Rick Worrell's auspices. More of this in the Wha-Who Whisper but save the date now and sign up for your favorite room location in Hanover while there are still rooms available.

I can't close without acknowledging the terrific work that Em Houck is doing on the Alumni Fund Campaign. He and his Regional Class Agents and Assistant Class Agents are showing good results to date. Of course to be successful we all need to participate! We have a long way to go in this category but for the life of me I really can't understand why. Dartmouth is a far better place now than it was when we went to college and should you have an opportunity to go back I am quite confident you would agree. Support her, she needs you.

SOUND OFF! - '56

Last year there were nearly 300 of our 1956 classmates who did not contribute one penny to the Alumni Fund Drive. Of all the classes between 1950 and 1960, our class - 1956 - has the lowest participation index. Clearly something needs to be done. What are these gripes, complaints, resentments, and miscellaneous reasons for non-participation?.

Your class executive committee has decided to survey the reasons, solicit the gripes, and present the results so that the Class's collective views maybe better reflected to the College.

Collect calls from non-givers will be accepted by the following survey team! Give us a call! Doug Stevenson (Minneapolis) 612-339-9033, Fred Oman (Dallas) 214-748-7831, Line Spaulding (Worcester) 617-791-5588, Lee Gammill (San Francisco) 415-388-6696, and Em Houck (Indianapolis) 317-261-3625.

As an added inducement this year, several "Angels" in the Class have agreed to match each resurrected giver's donation. Let's strive for 100 per cent participation! this aforementioned announcement didn't tear up the majority of the returning alumni but there were those of us who smiled inwardly, knowingly.

Our foreign scholar. Yuan Kit Ha is graduating this June. Egil Stigum and Bill Carleton have organized a dinner to be held in Yuan's honor at the Gourmet One Restaurant in Norwich on June 2. Time approximately 6:30 or 7:00. Many men who have been involved with the Scholarship Program over the years plan to attend and of course Bill and Egil would enjoy having as large a turnout as possible. (Bill's telephone number is (603) 643 3087).
