More '28ers have reported that they have not retired. Joe Chay, who is 72, writes from Taiwan: I am quite busy rebuilding my starch factory—vacuum drying and mechanical conveying system. Even here in Taiwan workers hate to work hard and expect more pleasure with more pay. We have to let them watch the machine move instead of moving their arms.
"My oldest daughter is working for a furniture company after Fresno State College. Her husband is assistant professor at L. A. State College. My second daughter is working for NASA in Houston as scientist after Stanford University with M.A. in Mathematics. Our only son is helping me after graduating from a business college here in Taiwan."
Bill Heep writes "I have not retired and don't think I will for some time. I still get a real kick out of running the Lord & Taylor Westchester store, which I have been doing since it opened in 1948. We had a month's trip to Turkey, Greece and Yugoslavia last spring and enjoyed every minute of it. Had some real tummy aches in June, asked the doctor to put me in our hospital to find the cause, thinking they would take some pictures, make a few tests, give me a dose of medicine and send me home. One look at x-rays and they had me on the operating table pronto—malignant obstruction in colon. I have spent all summer recuperating and expect to start part-time work in September." The adjoining picture of Bill and Lawson Van Riper and their Dartmouth sons was taken August 20.
Red Edgar has been receiving congratulatory letters for his thoughtful and inciting letter in the July issue of this Magazine, in which he pointed out how ridiculous it is to try to destroy our Dartmouth traditions. If you missed it, I'll be glad to send you a copy.
A copy of the Andover Bulletin has been forwarded by Charlie Donovan '43 with a half-page picture of Red Sanborn and a tribute to him for his 44 years of service to Andover in many capacities: teacher, house-master, coach, and advisor to Outing and Natural History Clubs, to name a few. The George K. Sanborn Fund was established in 1971 by friends, classmates, former students, and members of the faculty and board of trustees, for the beautification of campus grounds in honor of Red. Approximately 200 donors have so far contributed $3,500, the income of which is used to plant and care for new trees, shrubs and flowers on campus.
New Jersey's welfare director Irv Engelman made the headlines when he announced he would resign as of next January 31. He is generally credited with being the architect of much of the public assistance legislation developed in New Jersey during the years. Irv's career in state government started in 1930. He has been director of the State Division of Public Welfare since 1960.
In spite of retirement, George Davis keeps busy. One of his major chores is heading up the campaign for $26 million to complete Skidmore's new campus.
Harv and Betsey Fisher of Fair Oaks, Cal., spent the summer in Andover, Me., and welcomed their third grandchild September 8.
