As noted above, my secretarial-address for the next six months (June 1 to December 1) will be Norwich, Vt., instead of Captiva, Fla. This is our established pattern, involving six months of each year in Norwich and the other six months in Captiva.
This is the last class notes of the AlumniMagazine until the October issue, as the July issue is devoted to the reuning classes. Those of you who are planning to attend the Princeton game in Hanover on October 12, are urged to join us in the usual informal class gathering immediately after the game at the Norwich Inn. The arrangements assure class members and their wives and guests of having a convenient place to gather for drinks and/or buffet dinner between 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Mark this date on your calendar and make your room reservations now, if you haven't already done so. Also, let me know by mail (above address) or by telephone (802-649-1924) that you are planning to be with us.
When you read this the 60th Anniversary Alumni Fund, with a total goal of $3,750,000 will be in the final push prior to the deadline of June 30. More than ever the College and the class agents need a strong helping hand, and our share as a class is $60,000. Success of the Alumni Fund depends upon each of us to participate on a realistic basis. This is just a reminder to those who have yet to make a commitment.
The Dartmouth Alumni College, scheduled for August 11-22, 1974 in Hanover provides an outstanding opportunity for classmates and their families to be continuing students and to explore a broad range of realities which are crucial to understanding the relations of Man with Nature, and the question of who's ahead. Reservations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis.
Bill Lang writes from Eleuthera Island (of the Bahamas) that he and his wife Lida were enjoying vacation with one of their daughters and her family. "Pretty tough on senior citizens - tennis, golf, and snorkling, plus odd baby-sitting chores, which these grandparents enjoy," according to Bill. He also adds, "the only possible beneficial result of Dartmouth going coed is that of the eight grand-children five are "gals," so that I now have these additional opportunities for more Dartmouth men in the family. In our home state of New Jersey we have 'progressed' so far that even Little League is ordered to include females on a competitive basis."
Through Bill I have also learned the sad news of the death of Bob Niebling's wife Polly during the middle of March. Other details are not available at this time, but the Class extends deepest sympathy to Bob and to their son Michael and daughter Kate.
The General Tire and Rubber Company has announced the retirement of Hank McKee after 23 years with the company, including the last six years as head of investor relations. Hank joined General Tire in 1951 as marketing research manager of the tire division, and in 1963 was named corporate marketing research director. We hope to learn shortly what Hank's and Virginia's plans are for retirement.
I recently had the particular pleasure of hearing from one of my college roommates, FredJanvrin, who is enjoying retirement living in Brooksville, Fla. His new address is 621 - 8th Ave., High Point, Brooksville, Fla. 33512. He tells of major developments for him during recent years: his first wife Connie passed away in July, 1968 following surgery for a brain tumor in 1966; his son Fred has been living in Anchorage, Alaska, since the spring of 1970; Fred Sr. retired from The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company in September, 1972 and moved from Dearborn, Mich, to Brooksville in December, 1972; he is remarried to Mrs. Mildred Lee, adding three stepdaughters to his family, and they visited Hanover in the fall of 1971 to see the foliage and to let Mildred see a bit of New England; Fred says, "We keep busy, live a very quiet life, but Mildred enjoys her vegetable garden and we have a very nice community."
I do hope that more of you will take time to write about your developments and plans. Please remember to send news not later than mid-August for the October issue of the Magazine.
Special thanks to those who have contributed news and greetings during the past year.
Wish you all a good summer!
