Writing this column during the Christmas-New Years holiday season is invariably difficult, but this year I am doing it earlier than usual before Jean and I fly to California to spend the Holidays with our son Peter '62, his wife Libi, and our three grandchildren.

We appreciate the substantial number of greetings we have received, but the news content has not been very great. Bob Fox's Newsletter of November 26 had the most.

We did receive the sad news from HopHopkins of the death of Jack Blumenthal on November 19, 1975 while visiting in Naples, Fla., only three and one-half months following his retirement. The sincere sympathy of the Class goes to his widow Helen and family.

Jan and Wes Beattie report that they are considering touring Southern Pines and the sea islands in search for a "winter harbor." Venice and Naples, Fla., are also under consideration as alternate areas, with the inducement of having been offered the use of a condominium in Venice.

For those of you who may be planning to spend some time later this winter in Southwest Florida, you will be interested to know that the Dartmouth Club of Southwest Florida has been approved by the Alumni Council as the 146th Alumni Club of the College. The last two meetings of the year are scheduled for March 4th, or 11th, and April Bth, both at the Hilton Inn, Naples, Fla. Additional information and reservation forms are available from Edward S. McKinlay '42, Secretary, c/o McCormick & Co., Inc., 1400 Gulf Shore Blvd., North, Naples, Fla. 33940 (Tel. 813-649-3145).

Likewise, the Dartmouth Club of Sarasota, Fla., has scheduled its annual luncheon for March 23, 1976 at the new Sarasota Hyatt House, with Michael McGean '49, Secretary of the College, as the principal speaker. For further details contact Robert H. Chittim '30, Secretary, 6930 Curtiss Ave., Sarasota, Fla. 33581.

From Robert E. Pike '25 of Eatontown, N.J., I received a notice regarding Doug Alden, president de 1'A.A.T.F., which had appeared in Issues 4-5, October, 1975 of France-Education, Bulletin des Services Culturels de France auxEtats-Unis, on the occasion of his decoration to the grade of officer in the Order des Palmes Academiques by M. Andre Gadaud. Our special congratulations, Doug!

Somewhat belatedly we have received a copy of the address given by Walt Douglas, chairman, chief executive officer and senior partner of Parsons, Brinckerhoff, Quade & Douglas, Inc. when he was the guest of honor and speaker at a National Meeting of The Newcomen Society in North America held in New York City on April 16, 1975. The address, "An Enduring Heritage," covering 90 years of progress in engineering, planning and architecture, carries a statement characteristic of Walt, "Over 90 years of our firm's practice, it has survived because it stands ready to change to meet the needs of society as those needs change. Our skills remain keen, and our determination to contribute to the needs of both this country and other countries remains unabated." Walt is recognized as one of the world's foremost authorities in the planning and design of urban and regional mass transportation systems. He has made many significant contributions through innovative and challenging solutions to major problems in this vital field as well as in seaport development and in the hardened, blast resistant construction of many high priority national defense facilities.

An unusual number of address changes have come through from the Alumni Records Office since the last publication: Dr. Gilbert W. Beebe, 7311 Stafford Rd., Alexandria, Va. 22307; Lewis L. Chester M.D., Beach Tree Lane, West Hartford, Conn. 06107; William F. Dowling Jr., 121 West 6th St., Long Beach, Southport, N.C. 28461; R. Warren Loewi, 530 East 72nd St., New York, N.Y. 10021; Donald A. Murray, 2524 Hawthorn Dr., Beloit, Wis. 53511; H. Burling Naramore, Bridgeport Fabrics Inc., Box 68, Davidson, N.C. 28036; Robert M. Norton, P.O. Box 1448, Pinehurst, N.C. 28374; Robert G. Sands, 4434 Saxon Dr., New Smyrna, Fla. 32069; Horace B. Shaw Jr., Burlington Savings Bank, 148 College St., P.O. Box 949, Burlington, Vt. 05401; Walter Watson, 129 North Skyline Dr., Chatham, Mass. 02633; and Merrill Worthen, 73 Pleasant St., Marion, Mass. 02738.

May Lincoln's birthday (Feb. 12), Valentines Day (Feb. 14) and Washington's birthday (Feb. 16-Monday) bring good things for all of you.
