Welcome to another beautiful fall, and to another edition of '33 class notes.
The period since the last issue of the AlumniMagazine has been a long one but not a particularly productive one as far as news of classmates is concerned.
Since this is being written in late August, I cannot report on either the business meeting of the Class in Crosby Hall or the informal class gathering at the Norwich Inn on October 12 in connection with the Princeton game, but watch for full details in the December issue, or in a possible earlier issue of the newsletter by BobFox.
Our special congratulations to all who helped achieve the outstanding success of the 1974 Alumni Fund, and our special thanks to the 330 class members who participated in the total class receipts in excess of $55,000. We cannot be happy over the fact that this is more than $100,000 under the 40th Reunion receipts of last year, but it is still 92% of our dollar objective of $60,000 and $3,000 more than was contributed in 1972. All this in spite of the fact that ChetThomson, as head agent, has achieved a "first" by having his company offices in New York City completely bombed-out on April 22, depriving him of access to all his class and Alumni Fund records during the Alumni Fund campaign. Who else but Chet could do this?
George Farrand reports that "Polly and I had a great trip to Hawaii in April, visiting four islands and staying at the famous Mauna Kea Hotel, where I played in a tennis tournament. We had a nice visit enroute in California with our son Richard '68 and T'73 who is with Clorox in Oakland. We have spent the summer here in Montoloking enjoying the superb weather, swimming, golfing, tennis, fishing, etc. My knee seems to have healed. We shall be here another month and then back to Montclair."
George Hamilton wrote me on May 31 correcting my error in the May issue of the AlumniMagazine in referring to his son William as Bill instead of Woody '71. Sorry!
As a proud father, Hoby Van Deusen passed the word during the summer that his son Hobart D. Van Deusen '58 has been named vice president of the Chemical Bank, where he advanced through positions of assistant trust officer, trust officer, and senior trust officer. Among his responsibilities is heading the estate department.
Born in New York City, he was a resident of Montclair, N.J., for many years before moving to Westport, Conn. He is a member of the Holland Society of New York and of the Weston, Conn., Field Club. He is married to the former Mimi Huntoon. They have two daughters and a son.
Al Speare sent a card via Jeff Davis with greetings from Nepal, where he had completed a two-week trek in the Himalayas, tenting at night, with porters to carry the gear and cook the meals. "A most unique experience, but pretty rugged - got as high as 15,200 feet."
