Some of our class officers have been doing yeoman duty representing us at Dartmouth occasions. On April 23 Nelson Doe attended the gathering of the Dartmouth Club of Washington, D.C., where there were about 500, including friends and relatives, present. Then at the Post 50-Year Reunion Connie and KatherineSnow, Quech and Bertha French, Fletcher Clark and Nelson Doe were all present together with Grace Burnham. For the Snows this was just one feature in a round of graduations and weddings. Our class president even managed to be best man at his grandson's wedding!
We received a long letter from Mark Allen this summer. The poor guy has been through the ringer, what with operations and hospital visits, but he refuses to lose his good cheer. Just says "I really haven't had too much fun for a while." News from Charlie Powers reveals that he has little time for relaxation. He takes library material to the patients at Laconia Hospital twice a week; sings in the choir (the only man) at the Methodist Church, often the soloist; has been going to Boston twice a week to see his youngest son who had unusual surgery; rakes the yard and cleans the house as his wife is an arthritic, and goes here and there on a moment's notice to help a friend in need.
Sanford Petts gave up his usual trek to California last winter and found Kennebunkport a bit too icy. Morris Knight writes of his high hopes that the new drug cure for Paget's disease may get on the market in time to be of real help to him. We all miss Morris at reunions. BishopBrown in South Africa reports good health at 86. He decided to sell his car which reminds me that when he first came to Durban automobiles were scarce.
Our faithful Kathie Baker sends word of Hal's fondness for any reminder of Dartmouth. The Bakers celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in June. They constitute another miss at reunion.
We lost Scotty Rogers and Chip Farrington this summer. We also regret to have to report the deaths of two wives and one widow. Irv Putnam lost his wife last October and Ray Tobey's wife Edith passed away this July after a long illness. Edith and Ray were regular attendants at our reunions. Edith will be greatly missed. Dudley Richards '39 sent us word that his mother, our Joe Richards' widow, died in January 1974. Her father was in the Class of 1880. Our deepest sympathy goes out to all these Dartmouth families.
