Alan B. Shepard Hon. '13 and Louise attended the housewarming of Vice President Nelson Rockefeller and Mrs. Rockefeller in Washington, D.C., and then flew to the Mountain House in Whitefield, N.H. to celebrate the birthday anniversary of his mother Renza. That is where the Class held its post-reunion in 1923. Some will remember the auto trip up Mt. Washington, the tortuous trek through the Lost River and Paul Harmon's longest drive of a golf ball. Alan, of course, is Rear Admiral Alan B. Shepard, the renowned astronaut who played golf on the moon.
Arlene Warren (Mrs. Howard P.) is now living in Columbia, Md. at 9350 Our Time Lane (Zip 21045) with her daughter Harriett who is on the faculty of Towson State College in the occupational therapy department.
Oscar Scharrer likes Dartmouth as it is today: "I was in Hanover for my grandson's graduation. There has been a great change, and I think it is for the better, although the times we were there were most outstanding and satisfying to me."
Oscar and his son Dick Scharrer '41 were there to see Ric '75 graduate. The three generations had their picture taken, a copy of which we would like to publish in the 1913 Newsletter someday. The grandson Ric entered the Cincinnati School of Medicine in September.
After the graduation exercises, Oscar wanted to look up some old cronies and left the motel. He did not come back at the appointed time and they went looking for him. He hadn't found any of his cronies and decided to walk up Balch Hill as in undergraduate days. After he reached the top he couldn't get a ride down and walked all the way back - some 3½ miles. As Dick Scharrer said in his letter to Joan Hier of the Alumni Magazine, "Not bad for 87½ years. See if you can top that."
