COVERS
Known variously as the President's Medallion, the Flude Medal, and simply "the jewel," the gold and silver badge shown on the front and back covers serves as the symbol of office of the President of Dartmouth College. It was donated by a London broker named John Flude in 1785, shortly after Eleazar Wheelock completed a fund-raising trip to Britain. The four figures on the obverse represent the fable of the old man and his three sons who would divide a bundle of sticks, with the legend, "Unanimity is the strength of society."
