Reflecting on a classmate's comment that apparently was made during reunion that "even the asses in our class are good guys" actually points out two facts. One, we're all asses who perhaps are finally maturing after 20 years and can not only see our classmates' attributes but admit to our own failures and inadequacies; two, this is, in its crassest terms, why Dartmouth is truly unique.
We are a bunch of individuals who were proud to be individualistic 20 years ago and hope to perpetuate the spirit of the free individual until we die. Thus, the reason for the validity of our both being asses and good guys.
On to the individuals. It has been brought to light that a very special surprise birthday party was bestowed upon Mike Zissu in early June by his wife as a last hurrah before their impending separation. Attending the celebration from our class were Denny Minely, Buzz Farbar, DutchRosenberger, and George Cohan. Needless to say, this group is worthy of updating.
Minely is still living in New Jersey but has recently been appointed vice-president in charge of purchasing for Puralator, having moved to this position after 17 years with Westinghouse. Even more exciting for Denny is having his wife Ivy pass the New Jersey bar exams and begin the practice of law.
Buzz, editor, writer, filmmaker, and husband of a Latin teacher at the Dalton School, is said by New York magazine to be going into the restaurant business with fellow authors George Plimpton and Norman Mailer. If the food is as good as the prose produced by this triumvirate, Elaine's had better watch out. Farbar has three girls and commutes every weekend to their retreat on the tip of Long Island. Incidentally, Mailer's recent analysis of CIA activities in New York magazine is captivating and makes one wonder how many of our Dartmouth friends are employed or have been employed by the CIA. Think about it. The potential number is staggering.
Rosenberger, with or without his beard, is a psychiatrist, affiliated with St. Luke's Hospital as well as having a private practice. It is obviously not necessary to tell you that Dutch is doing well.
Cohan is the principal of Staples High School in Westport, Conn. It is hard to imagine anyone better suited to be responsible for the education of kids than George. He certainly helped enough of his college classmates make it through certain philosophy courses. As most of you know, he is married to the loveliest English girl, with the possible exception of Julie Andrews, but with the same name, and they have four children.
And finally to the birthday boy Michael. In many ways it is remarkable he has lasted 42 years but with his Eastern European heritage and his daily diet of yogurt, Mike will most likely outlive us all. Although admitting he has had his troubles with wives, he knows what he is doing when it comes to siring children and anyone who has met Audrey, Erik, and Jake will agree. As for his law practice, Mike specializes in copyright law and litigation, but emphasizes because of his own experience that more and more people are asking him to do divorce work. Interested parties can contact him at (212) 986-8650.
On to other individuals. It has been years since other commuters have been shocked by Roger Bensen's wardrobe for he is now a living legend as he boards the 8:15 in Greenwich. While some people express their individuality with their ties or watchbands, Roger does it with his slacks. The proud owner of 71 pair of pants and one sports coat, he favors his Lilly Pulitzer designs although he even has one pair made from a feed sack. For those who haven't kept up with Roger, he has been in the investment business since college and heads up his own firm, appropriately named Number One Corporation. And if anyone needs an answer to a sports trivia question, just call Bensen.
One of the biggest surprises at reunion was the discovery that Ed Ross had not had a drink in over two years. The former president of Kappa Beta Phi, Ross didn't have to stop but merely decided a healthier body might provide him with just that much more energy to tackle his demanding job as head of labor relations for Globe-Union in Milwaukee. What's more, Ed has taken up two hobbies quite diverse in nature, gourmet cooking and sky-diving. It is also rumored that Ed and his wife joined the JoeOberings in Santa Fe to hear La Traviata, but enough is enough.
