Obviously, it pays to know and do business with the right people. For instance, if you are once a customer of Elliott Weinstein, you are treated each Christmas with an appreciation fruit cake that only Bloomingdale's can create. As you know, Elliott is head of one of the finest printing firms in New York City and can do work anywhere in the country. On the other hand, if you are a customer of Line Spaulding's envelope company, you are lucky if you get a tour of downtown Worcester. However, in all fairness, Spaulding, in order to remain competitive, has a no-frills operation right out of Dickens and can supply you with envelopes of any shape, size, color, or gum flavor. I wonder what Jim Groebe, who is v.p. of marketing at Frito-Lay in Dallas, might send to his favorite customers? Jalapeno spread? And DickWhitney, president of Berger Brothers in New Haven, an orthopedic supply house, can show his appreciation by giving a truss or two.
Proud Parents Department: Jack Crowley writes from Seattle to announce that his son was accepted by early decision to the Class of'81, so we can count on Jack to be at the 25th since it will also be his son's graduation. Dave Perry, who is a captain with TWA and based at LaGuardia, reports his oldest, Peter, a freshman at Ft. Lewis College in Durango, Colo., is potential Olympic material in the nordic combined. And we understand Tom Knott's boy is one of the most outstanding soccer players in northern California. And what about Bill Sherman's two boys who are both near-scratch golfers and vie for top school-boy honors in both Kansas and Missouri?
Our Class should be proud of Jack Tamagi who, for the past year and a half, has devoted 100 per cent of his time to being the financial advisor to MAC, the municipal assistance body that saved New York City from bankruptcy. Jack is a partner at Lazard, Freres and was hand-picked by Felix Rohatyn.
Some quickies: Roger Griffin is financial v.p. of Pioneer Funds and covers a ten-state area out of Minneapolis . . . Flint Ranney, in addition to having the awesome job of writing the class newsletter, is still solvent despite being a commodities broker with Reynolds Securities for the past eleven years . . . Chet Zinn has recently been appointed associate general counsel at Connecticut General Life Insurance Company
... Bill Beagle is practicing for either the LeMans or the Ontario 500 each day as he commutes from his home in Orinda to Santa Cruz where he is director of marketing with Plantronics ... Tag Chapman was seen in Ft. Worth bidding on cutting horses and, believe it or not, really does work from sunup to sundown on his ranch raising over 200 head of beef cattle and some 30 horses ... Lee Gammill is tempted now and then to retire to his spread in Ross, Calif., and live off his wife's successful interior decorating business, but enjoys his daily boatride commute to San Francisco too much. Lee is the head honcho for the New York Life General Agency . . . Len Clark is enjoying his career switch into executive recruiting and clients are falling in line.
