A sad note to start this column. Mrs. Joan Hier, with whom all class secretaries worked so closely, passed away last summer, and we all lost a true friend and marvelous helper. Ms. Shelby Grantham has taken her place, in part, and I'm sure all of us look forward to a close association with her.
A further catch-up on summer mail is in order. Bill Rench was cited by the National Life Insurance Company of Vermont, recognizing "outstanding client services and sales," and Bill became a member of the firm's 1976 president's club. Congratulations, Bill!!!
Another press release cited Isaac Sulzbacher for the same award from the Jacksonville, Fla., agency. Both Bill and Isaac attended the educational conference at the Broadmoor Hotel as a result of their citations. Nice going.
A news release from Bethlehem Steel says, "William S. Cummings, assistant to the vice president in charge of mining for Bethlehem Steel Corporation for the past 13 years, has retired." Welcome to the club, Bill, and may you have as great a time as I have had!!!
Hugh Logan was elected chairman of the board of the St. Louis Blue Cross plan. He had retired as senior vice president of St. Louis Union Trust Company in 1974. Hugh has been on the Blue Cross Board of Trustees since 1968. Our congrats and best wishes for success, Hugh.
A news release from Hanover tells us that Stan Smoyer, retired legal aide to Johnson & Johnson, was given a Dartmouth alumni award for his services to community and College. Well-deserved, Stan.
Had a card from the Mad Nomad, BudYallalee, early in the summer from Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. He was on his way to Grand Canyon, Brice and Zion National Parks. Bud is working on a book with a most intriguing title - Travels without Dogs, Cats or Brats. He sent his best to all. Keep writing me, Bud, so I can keep track of one of the most traveled men in the Class.
Perry Gilbert sent me a picture of the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, with which he has been associated for quite some time. He was most active in helping the laboratory negotiate a 50-year lease with the city for six acres on which a new laboratory will be built. It took a lot of doing and Perry was one of the big doers. Congratulations!!!
I mentioned receiving a letter and picture from Harry Wallace in my May Column, but unfortunately the picture got separated from the column. I have asked that it be printed so you could see how pretty Kay is and how great the four grandchildren are and, oh yes, Harry is there too!! The occasion was Christmas in Bermuda, where Harry and Kay hosted the family.
Had a good chat with Jean and Tom Hicks at our guest day at our club. They were guests of mutual friends, and we all sat together at dinner. Both look great.
June and I traveled to Los Angeles to participate in the marriage of our son Tom to Paula Snyder on August 7. I was best man and Paula's mother was matron of honor in a beautiful small wedding ceremony.
All for now. I hope you guys pay your dues and write some goodies to Ed Brown, that I hope he sends to me, so I can share them with all of you!!!
