Starting with sad notes. I have to inform you of the passing of four of our classmates. Two letters arrived from Susan Stine '76, the secretary of the Dartmouth Club of Paris, France, who informed us of the death of LesterLittlefield four years ago. Susan also wrote thatCarroll Jordan passed away in France. (See obituary column.)
Jim Benson died on June 23, and Bill Emerson, a lifelong friend, was kind enough to write the obituary in the October issue.
Frank Spain, president of Grinding Supply, Inc., of Pittsford, died also on June 23. Frank was a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, having been on the 1936 Olympic Hockey Team, which won a Bronze medal in Berlin. He later played on a professional team which became the Boston Bruins. His daughter, Martha Fiske, said that Frank loved "everybody and everybody loved him." A fine tribute to a fine guy.
It is always sad to report these things, but I'm sure their many friends would want to know about them.
Bill Emerson also mentioned that Bill andMargaret Judd were back at their summer place in Damariscotta (there it is again), entertaining their grandchildren. The Emersons and the Judds were together several times. Bill also mentioned that Bob Davis called him. He had made a flying trip to Topsham, where his brother John '3l had undergone surgery. Thanks for the letters, Bill, and also for the article on Jim.
An article from the New York Times informs us that "C. R. Hulsart, president of the New York Times Foundation since 1974," retired on July 31. Welcome to the Club, Ray, and I know you deserve a well-earned retirement. Ray joined the Times in 1953 as assistant secretary and went up from there.
A clip from the Farm News says that the 1977 Dairy Club dinner was honoring Walter Bryant. Each year the Dairy Club of the University of Connecticut honors one or two persons who have made notable contributions to the state dairy industry. Walt has been connected with the industry since 1937. Congratulations on a job well done!
Last May, I received a letter from ShirleyEdwards, which came from Key Biscayne. She told about the get-together of Jake, JockoStangle, and Harding Mac Donna '33. "Needless to say, I drove home," she added. She and Jake were to be in Sturbridge, Mass., for July, August, and September and planned to be at the Yale game. She also mentioned that they were to be at Bonnie Oaks and had arranged a golf game with Tommy and Elaine Keane, who had taken some of the Edwards money back to New Hampshire after a Florida visit last winter. I really appreciated your closing comment, Shirley - to wit, "Enjoy your news about Jake's classmates (I left out the old as they are getting a bit sensitive about that)." Thanks much for the letter, and I'm glad .someone reads the column!
We saw Tom and Jean Hicks at a party and both are in great shape.
Happy Turkey Day to all!
