Presidential fever is sweeping New Hampshire. Candidates drop into the office almost daily, it seems, preceded by a phalanx of Secret Service agents. One candidate, Sen. Birch Bayh of Indiana, appeared early on a December morning just as I was reading in TheNew York Times that Bayh had named Jim Friedman as his new campaign manager. You may recall that Jim worked with former Ohio Gov. John Gilligan. Recently he has been practicing law in Ohio.
I visited with Dave Boldt and his lovely wife Freshteh a while back in Philadelphia. Dave has served in a number of newsroom positions with The Philadelphia Inquirer over the past four or five years, and when I saw him he was - and still is - the paper's Bicentennial editor, responsible for putting out a series of very handsome tabloid sections treating the area's Revolutionary heritage. In an editor's note in the first issue, Dave introduces himself to the readers thusly: "Because some readers will probably find some material in this ... Bicentennial Journal seditious, if not downright treasonous, this would probably be a good time to explain who we are ..." Well, among other things, we learn that the editor was granted a degree in history "by one of this country's widely known institutions of higher learning, which would, however, probably prefer not to be linked with this issue." Treasonous to Dartmouth, I say, to deny her association with a fine piece of historical presentation.
