I'm happy to report that the news of the Class is much better this month and also that the list of those planning to be in Hanover in June is growing steadily. In fact, as of February 1, (and you will probably have more up-to-date figures by the time this appears in print) we had 53 classmates who had returned their envelopes expecting to come and a total of 106 people planning to come for all or part. Sixty-nine had paid all or part of their fee! A word from Cliff England that many of you are forgetting to put down your wives' hat sizes - and in some cases - your own. Let Cliff know - extra large, large, medium, and small. Among the attendees, Sub Harris has a tight schedule but expects to attend at least part of the affair; Don Sutherland and Ginny are taking their vacation in April to go see a new grandson in New Mexico so they can only visit Hanover briefly since it comes during the week. Dr. John Ovitz and Jane are bringing two teenagers, Robert and Anne, all the way from Sycamore, Ill.
Ed and Margie Hyde sent me a copy of their Christmas letter with a long note attached. Ed is a partner-physician in the Green Mountain Clinic in Northfield, Vt. Like many of us, Ed has had some doubts as to coeducation, the ROTC question, the "Dartmouth Indian" matter, etc., but they hope to get to Reunion in June. Last year they had a trip by car through Switzerland and since Ed retains his interest in painting, a new one of the Matterhorn has replaced one of the Vermont scenes on his office wall. He sees Russ Capelle, a Norwich University professor, frequently and also Wendell (Butch) Harding at Vermont College in Montpelier. He also sees Scott Pedley, former roommate and medical partner who retires from Eastman Kodak in Rochester soon and has a vacation home in Northfield. None of these three have as yet indicated whether they intend to join us in June.
Bob Ervin writes from lowa City, lowa, that he is looking forward to our 40th, he hasn't been back since our fifth, and on a trip to see his Mother in New Brunswick, Canada. He thinks that if he had lived somewhere like New Jersey instead of Canada he never would have made it to Dartmouth. I think he probably is right. If I had come from Connecticut instead of Ohio I don't think I would have made it either. Bob retired in 1972 from government service as an industrial engineer and he and Gladys moved to Naples, Fla., where they had a wonderful year fishing, shelling, and loafing. They had to give it up when Gladys developed a lung problem and came back north to the Mayo Clinic for treatment. The Ervins have two sons, Robert, who is a geology professor at Northern Illinois University, and John, a pharmacy student at the University of lowa. Bob heard from his freshman roommate Chan Libby at Christmas. Chan is well and still has his beer distributing business in Bozeman, Mont. Bob says Chan's love of the College is so great he thinks he would probably give the keys to his warehouse to any '36er who dropped by. Do you remember that great ad that Chan put in the Magazine on page 16 of the June, 1972 issue?
The list of retirees continues to grow as the years pass. Dave Campbell joins this group on March 1 when U.S. Steel has finally decided that they can dispense with his daily services after almost 40 years. Dave and Doris have two sons and a daughter and the last information I have has son David doing rehabilitation work in California. John sells insurance for John Hancock in Pittsburgh and Coralee teaches school. My last count shows two grandchildren. Dave and Doris are planning to be at Reunion for the first time since our 10th and looking forward to seeing Johnny Favour then, a close friend from our days in Hanover.
Reunion mailings bring forth some in- teresting things - we've lost Budd Schulberg!. An envelope addressed to the last address in New York City was returned as unforwardable so he must be out on Long Island with those swans. Also a mailing to Bill Wood in Geneva, Switzerland, was returned marked "Parti." Perhaps Dick Crosby, who is on a sabbatical year from Colby-Sawyer College in New London, N.H., will run into Bill in England or the Continent. If anyone sees Schulberg tell him to send in his latest address.
Among the 53 mentioned in the first paragraph we have one from Florida, one from Washington (state), and one from Colorado so don't let distance bother you. Join the swelling crowd-It's later than you think. See you in June I hope.
