This sparkling late New England winter has been a season of high fun and of a certain sadness, emphasized by good times with numerous of our circle, and by the loss of Hank Frechette, George Seel, and Dr. Win Shorey whose biographies will appear in the next issue.
On a gray, gusty day Dutch Cotton and I journeyed to Keene, N.H., for Hank's funeral where we were with Bob Nissen and Ed and Bess Acker in the packed church. We talked of old days, and today's days, of how we change and how we don't change, and how these events leave us feeling massively shortchanged.
Dutch had been up for dinner shortly before, to talk about the June, 1977, 35th Reunion, since he succeeds me as chairman. It was a pleasant interlude and rewarding to hear that he, Caryl, family, and career are flourishing. The other day Harry and Penny Butterworth rushed by us on our road, hustling to round up two peregrinating horses with a station wagon, he in his fedora and Sunday-go-to-meeting suit. During this period we were well-set at bridge by Frank and Shirley Simpson; our perennial tennis foes, Bob and Dodie Rainie, have been treating us to their customary slams and bullets. (She has been president of the N.H. Medical Society Auxiliary and, he says, "I go to all the medical meetings as 'Mrs. Rainies' Husband'."
From Bob Harvey, in a note with dues to Lou Young: "One news item. We acquired a new granddaughter in October. Martha (Peterson) had a baby girl out in Eleva, Wise. Makes three in all. Mar has a boy going on two and Mike (in Warner, N.H.), a two-year-old girl. Sara graduated from Dickinson in June and is working for an employment agency here in Washington, D.C." And from Naperville, Ill., "Have married off my four daughters and have three grandsons and a granddaughter. Quite a switch. Just retired as city councilman after 4½-year stint. Keep busy as controller of Kroehler Mfg. Co. Regards, Vince Else."
Bob and Barbara Thomas moved from Pa. to Falmouth, Me., some months ago and report: "We're all well and happy. Carl Krogh here for a visit recently. Miss all you Pennsylvanians and the Delaware Valley, but rusticating happily by the sea." "Retired from Air Force last year (brig.-gen., command surgeon of the AF System Command) and we're enjoying life in sunny California. Younger son graduated Dartmouth '75, in first year at Stanford Med School - Regards, Sol Lifton."
"Pop - still trying to act young - rode Hon- da 350 to work again today. Still in shoes, secretary of D Club of Mohawk Valley, Rescue Mission, and Utica Curling Club. Mom - runs Senior Citizens of North Utica. Peter - Dartmouth '70, Masters in social psychology from Duke. Michael - in Moscow (Idaho) ballet - his wife is the ballerina and got him involved in dancing. They teach at Univ. of Idaho and tour with shows. John - MIT '74 in Lexington, Mass., computer co. Doug - plans to be a dental surgeon. Todd - at Northeastern U. In Boston. Started last summer with no grandchildren, now have six. Best, Gil Hurd."
"Still kicking," writes George Baine, "and enjoy annual surf fishing vacations. Just one year older and five years richer - both boys have finished college. Losing my hair, but ok." It happens that Monty Winship mailed in this: "The big news - my son Chris (Dartmouth '72) has had a haircut after six years!"
