I hope you have all had a pleasant and rewarding summer. Ours has been rather hectic as we worked at promoting a new recreational business that hopefully is the ski industry's answer to the summer doldrums - the Alpine Slide. It is great fun for the whole family. Should you find yourself in the vicinity of one, give it a try.
Congratulations to Jim Bovaird and his able crew of agents. We exceeded our dollar goal of $58,000. by a significant amount, raising $62,-293. What is most exciting is the fact that we had over 400 participants for the first time since 1970. As Jim states, "That is indicative of a very successful 25th reunion and the spirit that was rekindled." Jim asks for ideas and criticisms concerning the running of the campaign and also advises that he would welcome any and all who care to volunteer their efforts for the next campaign. Let us all lend a hand to our able head man.
The first bequest for the Class of'51 has been left to the College by the late Jay Wolf. Jay, who died last year, left his entire collection of about a hundred paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints to Dartmouth. The value of this bequest is in excess of $100,000. "What made Jay Wolf so special," says Jan van der Marck, director of the Dartmouth College Museum and Galleries, "was his loyalty to artist friends, his eye for quality, and his often-repeated desire to have his collection used as an educational asset to Dartmouth College after his death." An exhibition of 29 works from the collection was on in the Beaumont-May Gallery of Hopkins Center during the summer.
Received a note from Judge Jim Rogers following his return from the June meeting of the Alumni Council, which Jim attended along with Wes Nutten and Merle Thorpe. Jim has completed his four years on the Council but is still a member of the committee on athletics. The outgoing chairman of this committee is AlKarcher who, according to Jim, "unfortunately - or some may say fortunately - did not make the meetings because of business, so we had to get along without him." You win a few, you lose a few!
Dr. Frank Bruch, associate director of student health services at the University of Connecticut, has been appointed medical director at Middlebury College. In this new post Frank will be responsible for the treatment of illness and athletic injuries for the undergraduate body. Previous to his stint at Connecticut Frank was engaged in the private practice of medicine and also was a demonstrator in medicine at Western Reserve Medical School at the same time. Journeying with him to his new position at Middlebury will be his wife Sally, a Bennington graduate, and his six children.
Elected a director of the Excelsior Insurance Company is our own Joe Welch. Joe is president and treasurer of Chase & Lunt, Inc. of Newburyport, an insurance agency he acquired ownership of in 1958. In addition to his many insurance activities, which are too numerous to recount, Joe holds a number of important civic and other offices. These include director and vice president of Merchants National Bank of Newburyport, trustee and vice president of Anna Jacques Hospital.
A very interesting article appeared in the Sunday New York Times a few months ago. It showed a picture of Dr. Bob Maguire getting together for an evening of quartets. Bob, who is the head of the Department of Slavic Languages at Columbia University, plays the viola. According to Bob, playing music together "puts you in perfect harmony with people who have the same attitude. I've begged off very important engagements rather than break a quartet date. It's almost sacred, like your wedding day."
A final note of interest. Many of you I am sure have read about the Gerber Baby Food Company takeover attempt. The company has objected to the tender offer. Harrington Cummings, a brother-in-law of Daniel Gerber and a director of the company, was quoted as saying the board was "honestly concerned about all our obligations - to the company, the shareholders and to the community." There are even problems in the world of baby food!
That about does it for this month. Keep the news flowing and I hope to see many of you at one or more football games this fall.
