One of the most thrilling and memorable Dartmouth events was held on February 23 — Dartmouth Night in New York. A crowd of about 1,300 came to a dinner-dance at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel for the purpose of kicking off the Campaign for Dartmouth. Our Class was very well represented at this affair, with Prexy Buck Scott coming in from Philadelphia. In addition, we had in attendance Al Brout, Mike Choukas, Russ Dilks, John Gambling, Mike lovenko, Ed Lathem, Peter Martin, Gil Mueller, Howard Phillips, Hank Sanders, Dave Sacton, Ed Weisenfeld, Trustee Berl Bernhard, and yours truly. To add to the festivities there were also many wives and friends present. When it came to the speeches, President Emeritus Dickey reminded us of things as they were and President Kemeny told us about things as they are and might be. Our new head football coach told us about things as he would like them to be. One of the highlights of the night was a program by the Glee Club, capped by a rendition of "Dartmouth Undying" that was accompanied by a slide presentation tied in with the words. It was very moving. After a night like this, one is reminded of the words President Dickey always used in his valedictory, "... in the Dartmouth fellowship there is no parting."

I received a short note from Jim Bovaird outlining the Alumni Fund campaign plan for this year. Jim has put a lot of work into organizing this most important function. He has enlisted a large staff of volunteers to aid him and I would like to suggest that you dig deep when one of them calls on you.

The Foreign Trade Association of Southern California has elected John Greenwood president. John has had 22 years of in-depth experience in commercial banking in California, Chicago, and the Far East. Presently he is vice president and manager of the Chartered Bank of London, Los Angeles branch. John's wife Joan is a professor of English at California State University, Fullerton division. They have two teen-age children.

The Massachusetts Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Travelers Corporation, has elected George Bissell president, chief executive officer, and a director (that doesn't leave much for anyone else). Prior to this move, George was managing partner of Massachusetts Financial Services in Boston. They are the investment adviser to Massachusetts Investors Trust, Massachusetts Investors Growth Fund, and other mutual funds. George is a chartered financial analyst and has served as president of the Boston Security Analysts Society, and he is a trustee of the Boston 50 Savings Bank.

Some interesting facts have come out concerning some of Jeff Hart's enterprises. In addition to being a professor of English at the College, he is a syndicated columnist of a conservative political cast. This includes having his column syndicated to 200-plus papers by Hearst's King Syndicate, being an editor of National Review, and being vice president and trustee of World Research, a think-tank with headquarters in San Diego. As Jeff puts it, "World Research is an organization trying to make a case for the free market and capitalism in the context of the college campus." Despite his many outside activities, Jeff does not ignore his professorial duties. He has more than 200 students enrolled in a new course on literature of the 1920's. He is also finishing a book on Hemingway and Fitzgerald, and he has been on the Dartmouth faculty since 1963.

That about does it for this month. Remember to think long and hard about your gift to the Alumni Fund.
