Names make news — so the old newspaper saying goes. And they make particularly good news when the names are those of '47s.
Auston O'Toole got his name in the headlines of the Braintree Observer and Sunday Forum which announced his appointment as corporate marketing manager for Columbia Technical Corp. He will be responsible for the development and coordination of corporate marketing, advertising and publicity programs. The O'Tooles live in Cohasset.
Another newsmaker is Jordan Eskin, subject of a story on the Knight news wire and published in the Hartford Courant. Jordan launched a nonprofit organization called Democracy for Stockholders, Inc., aimed at protecting the rights of the nation's 30 million shareholders, who, he says, "are effectively barred from voting to change management" when it fails to serve their interests. With a number of persons having asked to have their names removed from the membership list for fear of being linked to a potentially controversial organization, the group was off to a slow start. But our classmate, a New York City attorney, didn't seem discouraged. "There's too much self-interest at stake" for investors not to keep an eye on his organization, he told an interviewer.
An article in the Stamford Advocate reports the unanimous re-election of Bob Foote as moderator of the representative town meeting in Darien, Conn. Praised as an "exceptional leader," Bob predicted a "challenging year" in 1977.
Fred Frassinelli was also in the news last fall. He has been appointed to the board of trustees of Sarah Lawrence College. Two of the four Frasinelli children, Sarah and Hannah, attended Sarah Lawrence as did their mother.
Gerry Bissinger has already received recognition in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE'S "Give a Rouse" column for being named president of Lebenthal and Co., New York City municipal bond firm where wife Eleanor is executive vice president. At last report, son Buzzy was working on the Ledger Star in Norfolk, Va., and daughter Ann was in Nantucket.
The Conifer Group, Inc., a holding company, reports the appointment of Fred Ruoff to the new position of vice president, human resources. He had been serving as vice president and personnel director of Guaranty Bank & Trust Company of Worcester which he joined in 1966. After graduating from Dartmouth, Fred received his master's degree from Rutgers and did additional graduate study at the University of Pennsylvania. The Ruoffs live in Westboro, Mass.
In paying his class dues, Bob Craig notes that his family has relocated in Pittsburgh after having been away for ten years. He's in his 28th (or is it 29th?) year with Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania and he has responsibility for telephone installation, repair, testing and commercial operations in downtown Pittsburgh. Three of the Craig children are in college, and one is in high school. Bob finds some time to play tennis and bridge.
From Panama, John Rogers writes that he has a son in college and a daughter in the first grade so "it looks as though I'll have to continue working for a few more years before retiring." John expects to return to the States for home leave next September. In keeping with the see- the-world reputation of our Class, he has completed 27 consecutive years of residing overseas.
As a final item — it's nice to make contact again with Bill Moran whom I haven't heard from since college days. Bill is teaching in San Jose, Calif.
