Class Officers Weekend convened in Hanover on a balmy weekend in early May. These sessions are a learning, co-ordinating, and rejuvenating experience, especially when held in a pleasant, fun-filled atmosphere backed to perfection by the weatherman. President George Southwick, Newsletter Editor Tom Schwarz, and yours truly represented the Class of '57. You'll be interested to learn that Tom Schwarz was elected to the august Dartmouth Alumni Council as representative of the newsletter editors.
During the weekend we learned some of the background for Dartmouth's coming capital campaign whose ambitious monetary objective of $145-$150 million is designated primarily to increase endowment support of the College rather than to expand the size of the College or construct additional facilities. It is essential that the objective be achieved in order to ensure the continued maintenance of the excellence of Dartmouth. This effort to maintain quality will be officially announced sometime this fall.
Charles W. Maschal Jr. has been appointed plan administrator of Connecticut General Life Insurance Company's Columbia Medical Plan at Columbia, Md. In his new position Charlie will be responsible for the marketing and administrative aspects of the Columbia Medical Plan, with a membership of 20,000, as well as for working closely with the Patuxent Medical Group in the management of the prepaid group practice plan. He and his wife Roberta have a son and reside at 5058 Whetstone Road, Columbia, Md.
Pfizer, Inc. has announced that Edward C. Bessey has been appointed executive vice president. Pfizer Europe, with responsibility for the pharmaceutical and agricultural businesses in Austria, Italy, Switzerland and the United Kingdom and for the pharmaceutical development and medical functions at Pfizer's European Management Center located in Brussels, Belgium. Ed was previously vice president, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, and director of operations, Pfizer Laboratories. He assumed his new post in May.
The annual meeting at the Lakes Region Hospital Association was recently addressed by Dr. Merwyn Bagan on the subject "Malpractice, 1977." Dr. Bagan is a board-certified neurosurgeon who practices in Concord, N.H., and who has been a prominent member of the Merrimack County and New Hampshire Medical Societies since 1970. He is currently a member of the New Hampshire Medical Society's governing body, its house of delegates.
