As announced last month, Charley Collis has given The Campaign for Dartmouth $5,000,000, the largest single gift ever received! What a guy! What a class! What a college! Wow!

Fall reunion is no longer "mini." We were overflowing and could have used more than the 30 rooms at HoJo's. Happily, Millie and FredBunce have a nearby summer place and invited Dot and Bill Montei to stay with them. (Dot is excellent at helping secretaries into rain gear for a game). AI Mayer, with a handsome moustache, stayed with his son up river. Katieand Larry Brooks had first class accomodations at the home of the Stearns, who were abroad, Russ having been invited back to Poland to consult on a super highway to the Baltic. Lee made all food catering arrangements before departing and graciously offered their home for tailgating, with son Jon and wife in charge. How nice to have been inside with all that rain.

Friday night we stayed dry at the X-Club (old Norwich station). Only a few hardy souls ventured out for the torchlight parade and bonfire.

At the class meeting we learned we are still solvent, although the price of this MAGAZINE has increased, making a decision to increase dues a necessity, since it will take two-thirds of your ten bucks alone to cover it. The scholarship fund is ahead of schedule due largely to an outpouring of generous remembrances to Bill Breitinger. Frank Robin retired as class agent after six years of dedication and the glory of carrying the Class to the highest peaks we have ever known. Gene Jones has accepted that important post. He and Ruth have moved from Boston to a new home- 7148 Lemmon Rock Place, Tucson, Ariz. 85718.

We had about ten new faces. With so many now retiring, Hanover takes on renewed meaning. Warren Crumbine, for instance. He and Tommy came east to join with the old South Fayerweathrr gang at a gathering in New London with Bill McKnight, Bob Knapp, and BillHoyt, up from Baltimore. Crummy spends lots of time at their place on the Canadian border, fishing. It was nice to see Sherry and AI Bryant aboard now that they are back in the States, and also Bet and Bill Dixon, whose low low base voice remains excellent as evidenced in a songfest at the Dent cabin Saturday night. We cannot say as much for some of us once-upon-a-time tenors. Joe Kiernan was another new face, but he is not retired. He came with his brother Paul, and two bits will get you a buck they will be back next year. Sey Ochsner combined his trip with a medical school meeting in Hanover. Art Sloggett from Hawaii came the longest distance. He had such a great time at the 40th it appears he will be a regular.

Gib Reynolds missed out last year because of an operation, a shunt to bypass his liver, which now entails medication and a special exhaleinhale tube he must always have with him, and booze is a real no-no. He inadvertently left the tube at home but John Milne arranged to fix him up for the weekend. Rowie and Dave Samson, are now regulars, it appears, and she won't forget her bathing suit next year. Only two of our widows were with us, Pat Olson, now chairing the memorial gift program, and JeanBreitinger, who roomed with her.

This was the biggest attendance ever. If we follow the pattern of 1935 and 1936, it will soon create a rooming problem. 1935 had 140 people back.

We regret to report the death of JackMorrison in California. The obituary appears in this or the next issue of the MAGAZINE. Also, we regret to report that Dolly and ArnieShapiro's 27-year-old son Joel died tragically in an automobile accident in Salamanca, N.Y., en route to their 40th wedding anniversary celebration from Wyoming. He was the passenger when early in the morning his friend swerved to avoid a deer, sending the car out of control, and Joel was thrown out. Arnie flew out but arrived too late. Although Joel went to Boston University, he was devoted to all forms of outdoor life, especially mountain climbing, and Arnie said the DOC would have been a natural for him.

We do not have room here for the Dartmouth-Harvard gathering, which will appear next time. Suffice to say we were disappointed in the turnout, which seems to diminish each year as the locals retire and move away.
