As of this writing, February 1, and for the second year in a row, we are being buffeted by severe winter weather across the country. Instead of the traditional thaw during January, the midwestern and northeastern states are experiencing what is being called the "worst blizzard" of a century. It is hoped that by the time you read this the suffering and discomfort will have become a matter of vivid memory, and that we can look forward to warmer weather and to the joys of our mini-reunion scheduled for Quechee Lakes, Vt., on the weekend of September 22-24, 1978.
With the gala three-day weekend only six months away, think of the pleasures of renewing friendships with other class members and wives, and particularly in the attractive setting and facilities at Quechee Lakes. How about the fall foliage which should be about at its peak? On the sports-side, how about tennis, or golf, or watching the football battle between Dartmouth and Pennsylvania? Or the outstanding offerings in food and drink being planned by Quechee Lakes. These are just a few of the appealing things we will be doing together. How about it? If you haven't already made your plans and reservations, may I suggest that you do it now?!
Bill Likoff, one of the world's leading cardiologists and professor of medicine and director of the William Likoff Cardiovascular Institute at Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa., has been elected president and chief executive officer of Hahnemann, the 500-bed institution and 129-year-old medical college. He has received many honors for his contributions to medicine, education, and the community.
Bill Atwood has called my attention to an error in his address as published in the November 1977 issue of the MAGAZINE. It should have been 88 E. First Ave., Apt. 105, Columbus, Ohio 43201. Sorry! Bill says he is enjoying comparatively good health in spite of three operations in 1973. He works part-time for the Ohio State Commission on Aging, and he belongs to a Senior Citizens' Recreation Center, where he "dabbles" in ceramics, copper enameling, wood carving, and similar activities. He also mentioned Dick Goldthwait as still being at Ohio State University; Cal Milans, who is still practicing law as a patent-attorney in Washington, D.C.; and Howie Porter, whom he used to see in Atlanta, Ga.
With sorrow we have to add six more to those who have passed away: Jack Marden of Wilmette, Ill., died October 14, 1977; JackParker of Wyoming, Ohio, died November 15, 1977; Elly Blakesley of San Gabriel, Calif., died December 3, 1977; Morrell Goldberg of New York City died December 7, 1977; JackTrost of Milwaukee, Wis., died December 23, 1977; and Elly Wentworth of Cincinnati, Ohio, died January 12. Obituaries will appear in this or a later issue.
Alden Speare of 48 Bibbins Road, Fairfield, Conn., former chief industrial engineer of the Sikorsky Aircraft Company and former chairman of the Easton Conservation Commission, received an environmentalist plaque from the Connecticut Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts in recognition of his active service in the field of conservation.
Pierre Grace was a recent Captiva visitor as a guest of his sister and brother-in-law, and I had the pleasure of playing golf with him in a foursome. He is looking forward to the early sale of his metal-sign business to a group, including his son, Pete, and to moving to a recently-acquired house in Arcadia, Mo. Pierre and his wife Mary had planned to live in Colorado after retirement, but they found the high elevation incompatible with his health.
