After the long mid-winter respite of the last two months, readers will remember that the writings of Ken Canfield, sent in late October, had to be held until this month's column. Based then in Montgomery, Ala., Ken had attended the wedding of Bruce Bilger the preceeding spring at the University of Virginia. Bruce had plans to join the Houston, Tex., law firm of Vinson, Elkins, Searls, Connally & Smith. Ken noted that Mike Terry, Bruce's former roommate, then "undergoing the rigors of UVA Business School," was also in attendance along with Tom Eggleston, who was just finishing law school and has since returned home to Lafayette, Ind„ to practice with his father.
Ken recounted that Rick Castello had graduated last May from Yale Law School, along with Ken, and is now working in the Manhattan district attorney's office in New York. Other law school graduates he remembered were Chris Nicholson, from Harvard, who is now with the Indian Affairs Section of the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.; JimMiller, from Columbia, who is with the law firm of Baker & McKenzie in Washington, D.C.; and David Cranshaw, from Washington and Lee, who is now in Atlanta.
After graduating last May from Yale Law School, Ken spent eight weeks working for a law firm in Seattle, Wash., where he met up with Tom Tuohy '73, "a wintertime ski school director and a summertime lawyer," Bill Hart '75 ("Swish"), who is in his last term at the University of Oregon Architecture School, Dale Edwards '75, and others. In late July, Ken was fortunate to have been able to climb "14,410-foot, glacier-covered Mt. Rainier with his father." Unable to find a Dartmouth flag to don for his picture at the top, a can of Rainier beer substituted! Next, Ken left Seattle to fly to Washington, D.C., to spend a few days with Chris Nicholson, who had just finished the bar, on the Gulf Coast beaches and in New Orleans ("Bourbon St. was impressive, but much less so after having spent three years on Webster Ave."). Then in August, he began as a clerk for Judge Frank M. Johnson, Jr., in the U.S. District Court in Montgomery, for what was to be a year-long appointment. On the second day of work, however, the judge accepted President Carter's nomination to become director of the F. 8.1., so for a while Ken was unable to know his destiny. We conjecture that he is back in Montgomery now, since the judge was unable to accept the post due to poor health. Ken had spoken with Jack Thomas, who is in his third year of law school in St. Louis and "working hard on the law review" while his wife Debbie is "rising rapidly in the business world." Thanks for all the news, Ken!
A letter from Dave Martson, received in mid- November, recounted a recent visit of his to the campus during which he was able to broadcast the "Hall of Fame" radio show on WDCR and to meet some '81s. During an earlier visit he helped build part of the addition onto HPF, and in the process he met Bill Ballard, who was in the midst of a Ph.D. in physics at Stanford. Dave also got wind of the August wedding of Lex McCusker, at which Bruce Sanborn and Joe Younger were seen. Dave related that he was still employed at Dynamics Associates, in Cambridge where he was soon to have become a programmer. He noted that Harvard Square "is crawling with people wearing Dartmouth T- shirts and jackets" whom he bets think that Dartmouth is "one of the many colleges in the Boston area!" Nice to hear from you, Dave!
A note from Don Fredrickson related his residence on Marlborough St. in Boston and his joy of studying piano again with Yoriko Chodos. Don is keying up for applying to a degree program in piano at the University of Southern California for next fall. Best of luck, Don!
Also during November, news was sent on BillNewcomb by his mother, who recounted his marriage to Joan Murphy on October 29 in Wilton, Conn., at which Bruce Williamson and Gerry Bowe served as ushers. She also noted that Bill graduated last June from Albany Law School and is working for the law firm of Abbott, Tills, Tills & Knapp in Hamburg, N.Y., while residing in Orchard Park, N.Y.
Near the end of that month, Jeff Stewart was "seeking a break from the tedium of [his] third year at Emory Law School" by running the 26mile Callaway Gardens Marathon of southwest Georgia, logging a time of two hours and 51 minutes! He added that he hopes to run the Boston Marathon this April and queried: "Any other '74s with similar plans?"
Another letter received near that time served to bring us up to date on Jim Lay. Now working for the Linde Division of Union Carbide near Buffalo, Jim recounted that he finally defended his M.E. thesis on acid hydrolysis at Thayer School last fall after being away for a year. The presentation required of all such masters went well for him, and he was even able to take in the Princeton game and some gatherings with friends from Thayer and the Medical School. Then on October 22 he and Barbara Bain were married in Darien, Conn., with "the colors of Connecticut at their peak." The best man for the rite was John Boyle '73, Thayer '76, now working at Air Products and Chemicals in Allentown, Pa., Bill Hatch '73 was an usher, and Jim noted that Mike Nissim (Tuck '75, Thayer '77) was there along with other friends. The couple spent their honeymoon in Bermuda, where they "soaked up plenty of sun and surf and burned up the roads on [their] mo-peds." At the time he wrote, they were expecting Dave Thompson who was soon to begin at Carbide. Jim had been working with the "Purox" group, doing process chemical engineering on a system for pyrolizing municipal refuse to fuel gas and inert slag. The news is certainly much appreciated, Jim!
In a packet received from Hanover in mid- December, clippings from the B. V. TribuneAdvertiser of Whitinsville, Mass., and the Milford Daily News announced the October 7 marriage of Jon Dale to Mary O'Connor in Sudbury. The article recounted that CraigWhite was an attendent for the groom and that Mary holds a degree in history from Allegheny College, Meadville, Pa. She was cited as a systems analyst in New York City. Jon received his M.B.A. from Columbia and is associated with Dancer, Fitzgerald & Scrapple of N.Y.C., where they had plans to reside.
Next month hear (read) tales from the notebook of Nat Weeks and others. Until then, here's hoping you didn't get pinched on March 17!
